ok, I am wondering if the bolts that hold the engine guard that covers the oil pan seal up the engine case? If they are loose, could this cause oil leaking out the case seam on the bottom? Are these essential bolts to tighten the case? |

They do hold the case together.
Torque them to 14 ft-lbs. _________________ Glenn

ok, do you know if them being loose will cause oil to seep out the seam or out the bolt holes? I'm having a mystery leak and it doesn't ness. look like the oil pump but it is right in the area of where the grille bolts in. |

I doubt they are the cause of the leak. _________________ Glenn

It is likely the oil pump cover plate seal that has failed causing the leak. It is a thin paper gasket that some engine builders don't use gasket maker to seal up. _________________ 1967 beetle

yea, this was a fresh tear down. the guy who did the work is going to come over and check it out for me. After a brighter light and little closer inspection, I think you are correct about the oil pump seal. it looks to be coming from the bottom of it. Thank you |

well, to give an ending to this story, the engine guard grille bolts do, in fact, need to be tightened to seal the engine case on bottom. After i tightened it last night, came back this morning to a dry area and no drip forming on oil pan. yay!!! |

glad you fixed it. I like when people post the answer once they figure it out. It will help someone else out down the line |
