Question: Is fuel injected hose necessary for the hose on top of the engine to the cold start valve. It's hard to believe, but my 71 still has the original hose to the cold start valve. It is as hard as a rock, and will have to be cut off. I've heard pros and cons about whether std hose is ok, or if fi hose is required on these cars. Bob

You need to use Fuel injection hose only on this car. Not standard sizes either, but rather real Metric hose. 7mm if memory serves me. Also do not use worn drive clamps. Get real clamps similar to originals if they can not be reused. You have to have full concentric non pinching clamps, unless you like fire.

Parts stores will sell you 8mm standard hose and regular hose clamps. Almost nothing for this car, or any VW is available at the local parts store, or at least anything that will work like original or last more than a month.

Yes....as noted you MUST use high pressure fuel iniection hose in the entire fuel loop.....from the supply side of the pump, from its outlet at the tunnel, through the firewall, to injectors I and 2, to the cold start injector, to injectors 3 and 4, to the fuel pressure regulator, from the regulator back to the tunnel and back to the pump and tank.

The reason why you need pressure rated line for the return line from the regulator....is because if that that hose ever becomes crimped or kinked.....it will incur high pressure.

While 7mm hose would be best.....you can use pressure rated gates 5/16" hose. Just use good non-serrated fuel injection clamps.

You need to use Gates Barricade J30R14 certified fuel line as there have been HUGE problems with the ethanol and non rated fuel lines for lifespan.

Check O'Reilley and NAPA.

Here is a good thread on this fuel line thanks to Wildthings.

DO NOT use 1/4" line. While it can stretch well enough....its typical that while stretching the hose over flared fuel pipe ends....the pipe/tube cuts or gouges the inner plies. Ray
