Time for an update. I got all the tin fits done and trimmed, and recoated. Its all looking great now. Carbs are together and I hung the rest of the parts on the motor just to get an idea how it all was going to look. I think I may go back and powder coat the carb bodies in flat black to match the manifolds and air cleaners but for break in, this is fine.
I think it looks pretty tough for a little single port. Im getting excited to drive this car again.

I have to say, not only is this build done very nicely and the car looking great, but I am learning a lot from reading along with this build! Massive amounts of little things that make all the difference. I love details. _________________ 1963 Beetle |

Thanks, Im glad you are enjoying it. Motor just got broken in and is on the Dyno at Paradise for tuning and some "power" pulls, which is a relative term. I hope it makes about 70whp, we will see... _________________ Aircooled Vintage Works

That is super clean looking, but one question....
How are you going to run the throttle cable?

hole wasn't drilled at this point but it has since been done. I will post more photos once the motor comes back from the Dyno. _________________ Aircooled Vintage Works

Well the final push to get the car done just happened and here is the run down of how it went.
Firstly I finished dressing the motor and got it over to Paradise Motorsport so the guys could break it in, tune it and then dyne test it.
I really hate excess clutter on the motor where you can see it, so I did my best to hide, reroute and tuck back as much as I could. I made the carb balance tube out of stainless and then polished that. I also tucked the fuel line up behind the shroud and ran the breather tubes from the valve covers out of stainless and polished them too. It seems to be a tight fit back there, but it will all work and access to the back of the motor isn't bad.
The coil will also live back here on the left side of the shroud so things will be tight but with proper planning, everything has a home, and from the front, the motor will look clean and minimal. Just what I am after.
After a few days at Paradise in the hands of the motor masters, Jason and Kris, my 1800 is fully dialed in and running sweet. Its a single port remember so it was never going to be a fire breather but it definitely surprised us. It put down 71hp and 91 lbft or torque with a fat curve!
Check out that graph! We were all impressed with the motor, for being a small stroker it sure put up some good figures. It ought to be a great little low stress motor.

With Prado and Classic quickly coming up I knew I had to get the car done to make the shows so I was able to convince my buddy Atomic Jay to come back down and finish the car with me. We started on Saturday and finished up Sunday by dinner time.
This is where we started
First order of business was to cut, reroute and extend all the engine wires so they could be cleaned up, and hidden. Jason did an awesome job of making them tuck into their new homes behind the motor as much as possible. Then I got the car was up in the air to get the motor in.
its pretty nerve wracking at this point because everything is detailed and painted so any scratches would suck. going was slow...
Once the motor was in we laid the new extended harnesses out so they could be cut to length and hidden. This worked out really well because you can make them exact.
And this is how it looked with the coil behind the shroud, all power wires hooked up. Pretty clean.
Carbs going back on
All hooked up now. I plan to reroute the distributor wires and oil pressure wire too but for right now, it just needed to function.
Overalls of the motor in and tin on.
Once those last few wires are hidden it will look super clean, exactly what I was after. One thing that popped up after the motor was in, was that the car was super low in the back.
Although it looks awesome, its just a bit too far down for me so we reindexed the 4 inch drop plates by a few inner splines to get it back to the right height and called it good. _________________ Aircooled Vintage Works

Im running your rear shocks in back. I have about an inch of travel left in them at the current height. _________________ Aircooled Vintage Works

It was sitting just a bit too low in that photo. We raised up the rear some and now its perfect. After that I took the car out for its first test run. It went really well. Not much in the way of fixing that needs to be done. I can also say it is surprisingly fast!
First time out of the garage under its own power in a year. It felt great to drive it again.
This is where the stance ended up. I like it.
Headed out for a test drive around the hood.
side shot of how it sits now
And there it is, the car is done! Literally no stone left unturned, everything is new with the exception of the body and paint. It was a massive undertaking when you consider that every component was restored, customized or detailed in some way. I learned a ton from this build and I feel pretty lucky to have not made any mistakes along the way. I could never have done this without a few great friends. Biggest thanks to my good buddy Atomic Jays who I did the vast majority of the reassembly with. The boys at Paradise Motorsport who once again came through with a killer motor for me. Those guys never disappoint! I plan to get the car out to Prado and the VW Classic this year so if you want to see it, come by and say hi. Until then I will be putting some miles on it to work out any issues. Its been a fun build and it feels good to be done with it and ready to enjoy it again. _________________ Aircooled Vintage Works

Way beyond beautiful.
