Guys and gals. I have some learning to do here. I have a 57 bug that I am converting to IRS and installing a 091 into for the 2110cc motor. What I am not sure of, is what stub axles to use for installing bus axles or thing axles for this? Also can I run wide 5 drums some how? This is proving to be a challenge! Any help appreciated!

Its not really the axles that determine which stub axle and transmission flange you use, it is the CV joints. The CV joint not only determines this, but because of the difference in splines, they determine the axle also. The bottom line is how much travel do you want and how much $$$ do you want to spend. Personally, I don't run any stock axles off road. After market axles have a longer splined area, that can compensate for many problems. So if you want to keep the stock trans flanges and want to run either Type 2, 4 or thing CVs something like this will work.

However if you want to upgrade to 930 CVs (need trans flanges also), you can use these.

https://www.cbperformance.com/product-p/4489.htm

However, read these 1st

If you are running an 091 trans, you can run Thing stubs/axles and rear brake parts (backing plates, drums, etc) and have wide 5. Thing stubs use the same CV's as a bus so they will bolt right up to the 091.

Is it true that wherever you use a Thing rear drum, you can also use a T-1 wide 5 rear drum WITH a spacer ring?

The problem with thing stubs is that everyone thinks they are worth their weight in gold. The 1st conversion stubs I showed will fit up just like the things, quality wise, depends where you buy.

Don't forget Porsche 924/early 944 stub axles, they are the same as Thing stubs. And don't forget about the drive flanges, if your using a bus trans then you should have them already but if you are using a Type 1 trans you will need Bus/Thing/924/944 DF's, you can also get aftermarket stubs and drive flanges but the quality is questionable, I have not heard too much about the drive flanges but AM stub axle have been known to twist and break.
If you are using stock IRS trailing arms you can also use 924/early 944 and thing axles, I don't know about Bus axles.

Bus IRS stubs are fatter/thicker than T1/Thing/Porsche 924/944 stubs. The T2 stubs will NOT fit in a T1 hub.

Great point, I just assumed everyone was talking about conversion stubs. Cant hurt to clarify though.
