|
Last week I saw an ad on this site for a dry 1960 double cab. The ad had just been posted 30 minutes before I saw it and I saw it was in Las Vegas where I live. I called the owner right away and was at his door to see the truck within about 1 hour. He had listed it as a very dry, mostly compete truck. It was in pieces as he took it apart to restore it about ten years ago and never went any further as he got busy with life. This truck was not one of the known ones in the area by the VW guys here. It had been sitting in the back of a large garage for 10 years or so.
Here is where it gets interesting. The owner told me he thought the truck was originally yellow. I saw all the yellow when I was there, but I thought it just had a really thorough yellow paint job at one point where the windows were pulled out. I did take a photo of the M code plate when I agreed to buy it and gave him a deposit. I researched the M codes when I got back home and it looks like it was originally postal yellow and it also has some other interesting M codes. Take a look at the photos and enjoy.
I have one last item, the truck was owned by a sign painter at one time. It has SIGNS painted in large letters on the seamed side gates. It also has Decals Suck painted behind the door and it has a lot of pin striping on the exterior.
Does anyone know of a postal yellow double cab? I looked thru the few threads on here devoted to postal yellow and did not see another double cab. It seems most of the postal yellow vehicles were panels and a few single cabs. Let me know if you know of another double cab in this color.

Nice score , way to jump on a Doublecab deal & bring it home !!
Too bad they cut speakers into the seat base.....
At least you HAVE the base, and now YOU don't have to hack it up if you want speakers there.... _________________ Tom

Yes, it does have a few hacks. The speakers cut into the rear seat pedestal, the rear wheel wells were replaced with lipped 62-67 metal and the rear taillights holes were cut out to make way for 62-67 lights. All these areas will be replaced with the correct metal. _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

Very cool find. Maybe the OG yellow paint is preserved under that primer? _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

That is going to be the next step is to try to strip back the grey paint and see if the original yellow is still under there and if it is in decent shape. I would like to keep it original paint if it is decent and just patch and blend where necessary. _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

Thanks Everyone.
I got it cleaned out today. I spent 2 1/2 hours with a shop vac cleaning out all the nooks and crannies.
I hope to try to strip down a test section this week to see what is underneath. I will report back my progress. _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

Nice Dc! I hope that turns out to be postal yellow Dc. I saw add and tried to turn it on to a local guy but he didn't want to drive back out there to Vegas to look at it because he went out to look at another one listed there and turned out to be a total rust bucket.
Congrats again. _________________

Thank you to everyone.
I had a couple of hours of time today so I thought I would strip off a small section of paint. I was hoping for the original paint Postal Yellow to be in good shape. It is down there under a few layers, but it looks like it was extensively sanded and body worked and it is down to bare metal already in a few spots. I will keep going as time allows and see if all the panels are this bad. I can definitively say this bus started out as postal yellow.

Patience is a virtue you definitely have over me for going the full monty and uncovering the OG paint. Damn, that PY looks savage. As it stands now, though, it looks more like a Big Stick haha. I stripped a little more paint off the side and stripped the black paint off the m code plate.

I had a little more time and stripped some more paint off. One photo shows the seamed gate, it says SIGNS under the grey paint. I tried to strip the grey off and you can make out a couple of the letters. Sorry for the photo quality, I had to move this bus over to the single car garage so it is tight in there.
