|

Everett and I have been exchanging emails recently wondering when was the month and year when the old style ID plate in the ENGINE compartment was discounted..???....
So far we have been able to narrow it down to 5/60 for an early VIN code plate.
Anyone out there have an earlier VIN code plate or info on this ? |

Mine is December 16, 1959 and an early VIN plate.
So instead, you're looking for the latest production date with an early VIN plate...right? _________________ Beto

Hey Zen. When did the old style VIN plate in the engine compartment get replaced with the new style plate?
Thanks Everett for the pics. |

Calibus, what is your production date? You have G-wood with a May 13, 1960 date and a new plate. You said yours is May 1960, with and old plate. Sometime between yours and May 13, 1960. _________________ Beto

Zen M.
The 5/60 has the new style VIN plate..
But I'm sure someone knows the answer to this. |

Looks like there are two styles of the new borderless plate: the GMBH. version and the AG version.
Here's a quote from Wikipedia that might explain that part of the plate differences.
"In 1960, upon the flotation of part of the German federal government's stake in the company on the German stock market, its name became Volkswagenwerk Aktiengesellschaft (usually abbreviated to Volkswagenwerk AG)." |

Gotta put up a weak smile when ever I read a post on VIN plates.
My early Feb '63 would have the "new" style. If it had one. Its been "missing in action" since I got it back in '95. Not sure just why, but its seems it would be easier to rob Fort Knox, than it is to replace one of these plates if it goes missing. |

Also, the vin plates in the engine compartment were different sizes for early '59 and earlier, late '59 to the newer style. _________________ ---

Mr. Mike,
I am in the same boat, thinking about having a silversmith fab me up a replacement....
Maybe jewel encrusted, for added value...
