With her help, we started putting my daughter's Squareback together last Saturday. She is an excited 14 1/2 year old. As with all projects, some questions have arisen...

What seals are people using between the outer and inner fender (air intake, fender well, etc.)?

Also, anyone know where some front turn signal seals for a 73 can be had? seems to be a non-repoped part.

Thanks.

ISPwest has a great diagram for part numbers, and carries most of the parts; see the lower right corner here:
http://www.vwispwest.com/pg105/

52, 54, 68

Late front turn signal rubbers are very hard to find. Looks like they got some Lefties in stock. L and R are not interchangeable.

Thanks for the ISP West info, seem to have forgot to search their site.

Any idea as to whether or not 68-69 turn signals would fit? Drilling new holes would not be an issue. Curvature of the fender and large hole in fender are.

might have to just get the fenders welded up and go with an earlier year turn signal....

Wraparounds will not fit. Bullets can be made to fit.

Check the classifieds for used rubber seals... they do show up and can be reconstructed to work, even if damaged.

You can retrofit late fenders with early housings using Konrad's weld in plates.

The late seals show up from time to time but there's no rhyme or reason to it.

the body work on the car is 100% down to the paint. Fender swap may happen in the future. right now i just need to get his thing together.

Looks like those adapters area a bolt in type of thing. Granted, welding would be much better. Might have to go that route for short term 'satisfaction' and keep an eye out for front fenders.....

I just need to buy a parts car... Smile

Here's a list I put together years ago when I rebuilt my squareback

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

'Woolies' is a company here in the UK http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/ specialising in Classic car trim, I'm sure similar parts are available from US suppliers.

That sponge "cord" extrusion is available from mcmaster carr. You are looking for EPDM foam cord. It comes in 1/8" to 1/2" diaketer in 100 foot lengths.
Cheap for what you get but 100 foot is. $51.80.

might want to split the cost with a few others . You can also by rubber cord products from Auveco.....check their on line catalog. You can also get the self adhesive foam blocks at Auveco....or buy sheet EPDM foam from McMaster-Carr and use 3M 486 adhesive or similar. Rwy

McMaster also offers a "bulb" style seal that can be used for the wheel well lip to fender. I don't have the part number available on this computer, but I know they sell it (bought some in the past).

No.

That is polyurethane foam. Wrong material and wrong production quality. That is essentially the same material as lengths of split water pipe insulation and usually has an open cell structure and is not ideal for full outdoor use.

You are looking for foam made from EPDM rubber....no other material.

EPDM is what the windshield rubber on your car is made of and what brake seals are made of. It is very UV, water and ozone resistance...but fair warning....it is not hydrocarbon resistant...so do not get solvents or oils on it. Ray

Good to know, thank you.

Would either of these be better?
