|
|
Haven't driven much in the last month, but have had no odd symptoms until last week. Adjusted my clutch as I thought in had too much play, then went for a drive. Had some hydro lifter noise that's to be expected and it started right up and idles just fine. But when I left my house it doesn't want to accelerate past about 3000rpm while in gear (first and second). Drove home and put it away until today. Adjusted the clutch back out to give it a little more free play and went for another drive. Same thing.
Motor is a stock 2.0 FI with hydro lifters.
Steady idle
14-14.7 afr
Good oil pressure and quantity with 15w40 rotella
Idle timing is good, spark at each cylinder
Vacuum was down from normal. 13psi-ish
It will rev up in neutral just fine
I guess my next check will be to check plugs and valves.

Are those AFr numbers what you have while the condition is occurring? _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

That's are my standing idle number. Jsut to know its not a Vac leak while sitting/warmed up. They are lower when under load. Good point, didn't notice what is was when it bogged down. ARG.... guess I'll have to put my car through more painful testing this weekend. Thanks _________________ Rebuild your own FI Harness..My Harness

Nick,
Did your lifter ever pump up and stop making noise? I've seen a Vanagon that clattered for 30 minutes or more. You can't expect full power with flat lifters _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Did you check to see if you were getting centrifugal advance or not? |

I would suspect advance. I have carbs but experienced something similar in the past and the advance was sticking. Funny thing was it would also rev when out of gear but dogged off under load. _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

The engine didnt run long enough for the lifter to fully pump up, but in any previous experiences with a bled down lifter in my bus, it hasnt effected performance like im experiencing. Ill make sure to get it fully up though.
Ill check the advances and distributor components when i get home this weekend. Ill look into the afr door too but i dont suspect that would be it.
Thanks, ill report back when i can _________________ Rebuild your own FI Harness..My Harness

I think this nailed it. I lubed the distributor, and double checked all connections everywhere. There was some carbon buildup on my rotor that I filed shinny. Otherwise didn't do anything else.
Tonight I went for a drive, while the lifter noise was still prevalent initially, I had no hesitation issues and engine power was back to normal. By the the time I got done with my gas up and cruise, the lifters are quite again. Gotta love the simple fixes _________________ Rebuild your own FI Harness..My Harness
