As the title states.

I am replacing the front KYB (gas-a-just) and the unknown (oil filled) rear shocks with Boge from Bus Depot.

My main issue is the assorted hardware I removed. Among the different size bolts, washers, and nuts...I removed two small spacers. Both were located up front, but one was on the lower end of the shock (driver side) and the other was located on the upper bolt (passenger side).

As you can see...another case of PO hack jobs.

My question is about the spacers. Do I need those spacers for "stock" OE Boge replacement shocks? If so, where are they installed? front, rear, upper, lower?

These are the spacers;

I think when you receive the new shocks and offer them up, you'll find out if you need the spacers to fill the gaps or not. Many folks put spacers/washers in when they are fitting non=oem shocks. I've seen all sorts of creative "fixes" on shocks I've removed.

While the new OEM oil-filled shocks are not exactly the pinnacle of shock absorber technology, I suspect that your butt will immediately appreciate the comfort.

KYB Gas-Adjusts are just too stern and unforgiving.

(On the other hand, the GR-2 is just fine)

Using spacers is NOT a "hack job", they are REQUIRED if using KYB or other aftermarket shocks, because those
fine companies do not make a shock that actually fits our old VW's.

The Sachs rear shocks I got from BD about 12 yrs ago did not require spacers. Sachs pretty much = Boge.

Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't referring to the spacers alone as the "hack job", but rather how one was located at the bottom of one shock while the other one was located at the top of the other shock. As well as all of the the different types/sizes of fasteners that were used to bolt the shocks up.

So, to stay on course here. I am just clarifying the use of the spacers with OEM replacement shocks. You are saying NOT to use them, Correct?

I think it will be good. I hardly have any miles on this thing. Brough it home a year ago, spent the last year rebuilding the engine. Now I am onto the other things like brakes, suspension and creature comfort items.

One of the primary creature comfort items on the list is the drivers seat...it is just HORRIBLE...I can feel the springs Crying or Very sad

What is the OEM set up? Is there just one washer and nut on the top&bottom of each shock?

Parts manual shows 1 wavy washer under the nut at top end, and a wavy washer on each side of the shock bushing on the bottom.

As Kreemo stated, there was only the bolt, lock washer and nut. If it's a stock shock made for the bus, there should not be any reasons for spacers to fill the gap between the shocks rubber sleeve and the mount.

I really like the ride with standard boge shocks also Smile

Make sure you torque the shocks with the bus back down on the ground.
If you torque them whilst in the air you may twist out the rubber bushing when you get cruising.

Trying to put my head around that statement. Maybe i'm wrong. Please explain why since there shocks and not springs what difference could it make?

With the bus in the air you would be tightening at the shocks full extension. You ideally want to be aiming to torque it up at the center of travel so the extension and compression and subsequent lateral movement is more equal.

That may sound like a bag of toss but I can confirm that the only time I did it wrong the bush on one of my front shocks had half twisted out within a few thousand miles.

I think the extreme amount of travel on springy bay shockers makes it more of an issue than on other cars

Took a look at the Bentley, it says a 30 degree incline but i understand now that the bolt angle is effected by height. Thanks for the knowledge.

I had my stock shocks replaced years ago with KYB. I found the ride to be too harsh and suffered with it for a few years. They made the front end ride a little higher as well. This never "settled down" as I was told to expect. My mechanic at the time told me my OG shocks were "shot" and sold me on the KYBs. A number of years ago I found a nice set of Bilsteins on a 77 bus in an Oregon Pick-n-Pull and they have been great. I think they are the originals that were offered for the Type 2 years ago.

The genuine VW of Brazil shocks ride very nice, I put a full set of them on my bus with a new set of VWOB leafs. I definitely wouldn't say they are performance shocks, but the ride is very, very comfortable.
I've got some photos somewhere if anyone is interested.

I work for a company which sells KYB, I can get those shocks at cost and yet I still decided to use VWOB. The ride of KYBs never impressed me. They can very literally shake a rusty VW to pieces, as it did to me.

Just wanted bring an update to this thread. I've put about 300 miles on my bus since all of my work (engine, trans, bearings, shocks....). Everything is working well. I really like the ride quality of these shocks and I am glad I installed them...money well spent.

After completely removing the rear sway bar and installing new rubber bushing on the front (1") sway bar as well as new (8 ply) tires, the ride is very forgiving. I've notice the ride is very soft over bump and through dips all while maintain great control in turns and down the highway. Very little body roll while on the fast, tight on and off ramps. It is truly a perfect balance of softness and control.

The OEM set up works perfect, soft shocks, front sway bar, and 8 ply tires. That's all ya need!
