Now the engine tin is at the body and paint shop getting painted as well as the body.. so we will post those results later...
I am jumping between this Manx Dune Buggy and the 67 Split Window that i am also restoring.. so you can tune into the other thread if you would like to see what i am doing over there.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=634144
Now back to the dune buggy..
The previous owner did such a bad job that i have had to correct it.. like where the gas goes into .. well their hole was further up and when they messed up and found that it was lower then they butchered the opening.
These were the tools that i used which are a Jigsaw and rotary cone sander grinder
Now it is neatly cut and shaped
Looks good on there but there is a gap between the lid and the mating surface of the hood.
So its time to get a gasked at Shell Lumber but it is quite expensive but someone on Manx facebook page suggested i should use an old inner tube and i still had one around so i went to mark them to know where i would cut.

You might have to shim the high side or else split it with some thin washers. You could also double the inner tube where the gap is larger.
If you tighten it and bend it the lid won't fit right and might bind, or the edge won't line up.
Just don't tighten the "everliving you know what" out of it when you do install it. _________________

Look at what i did now to the gas cap lid cover...
I like the polished aluminum chrome lid but i wanted to be a tad different so i went to a VW show a couple of weeks ago and bought a Jetta hood badge and did this...
It had a black plastic backing which i carefully removed so the chrome diecast VW would not break
I presented it and marked with a Magic Marker (Sharpie) where the key hole would be so then i would know where to cut with my small rotary disc
and if you look at the RED arrow to where i also marked it at 9 o'clock so as to keep it leveled.. you would't want the emblem to be Lob sided
I used 3M Adhesive double face tape to carefully out onto the backside of chrome emblem and use an X-actor knife sharp enough to cut the excess.. then I then cleaned the surface of the aluminum cover with some alcohol.
Then removed the red tape off the backside of the emblem and pressed firmly and here is the end result
Here is a diagram to figure out how to mate it together.. have to improvise a bit

My dune buggy came with a very rusted tunnel where the clutch cable, accelerator cable and fuel line were rusted thru and here are some pics of what i have done and the diagrams to follow
I just cut two access holes under chassis tunnel to remove the rusted clutch cable and throttle metal conduits. I used the Sawzall in some areas.. at least now I can go in with new steel tubes
Clutch Cable tube 5/8" x 5'
Accelerator Cable can be 1/4"
Fuel Line can be either 1/4" or 5/16"
Now i could have bought another chassis but closest one is 250 miles north then to get a trailer + Time + Mileage + Tolls + Gas etc etc.
So i have opted to do it myself and here is what i have done thus far:
Here are the rusted stock factory tubes that i removed.. i had to use a chisel to cut some of them and also removed the heater cable lines because i am in South Florida and i don't need them
Now i have to locate the new steel tubes which i hope wont be that expensive.. a friend suggested i go with Hydraulic set up like on the sand rails but that is quite a bit more money...
The following are some good cut away diagrams to show the detail that was given to me by a fellow dune buggy owner on Facebook.
I have a friend that is going to donate 5/16" Copper fuel line that i can use in place of the steel fuel line..
For the Accelerator tube I can use brake line or same 5/16" copper tube.
As it is tough to locate it in steel and stainless steel is expensive and this next diagram you can see how far i have to go the entire length of the tunnel
This is where the clutch cable and accelerator tube will exit thru
Here is what it should look like from the rear view...

Nice job on this. Can you tell me the inner and outer dimensions on that chrome ring. I love this idea but the PO in my buggy used a marine grade cover and I wanted something that looked more automotive.
Thanks

I am using a filler neck from CIP1 that i bought for $35.00 and although the diameter is smaller than the fuel door I am going to make a ring to use underneath so it can mate up with the billet ring.. it will use blind rivets so it can be a one piece and not have any gaps so it will be sealed tight...
It takes a 2-1/4" Hose and most gas tanks are 2" so i went to Amazon Hose to get the hose in the right O.D.
and I finish my custom fuel door with the V W Emblem..
I posted it up on FB just to show the Manx Dunebuggy group page what i had accomplished and you won't believe how many people want one for their buggies.. I have over 60 requests and some from as far as Australia and Kyoto Japan.
It came out beautiful....

Can you please edit your post and eliminate all the photos so it doesn't clutter up my build thread.. you can just ask me a question directly or just post one photo but not all those for just one question. |
Apologies- post edited. So what was the inner and outer cover dimenrioms- or better yet- what car/truck is that cover supposed to go to? |

I have not posted for a couple of months since December 16th so now we are in March..
Well the panels were painted in January so here they are..
First is the Epoxy Primer on the body and let it sit in the sun for a good long while but unfortunately it just started to drizzle by the time I took these pics
I am not a fan of RED... Yuck but i thought that i would keep with the same color scheme as the seats that were Red and Black so i decided to paint the body HOUSE OF KOLORS - CANDY APPLE RED.
I would have preferred Maserati Blue Oceano like my '67 Bug and my '69 Bay Window Bus.. but oh well Here i am and it's RED...
Getting it home was a mission but i removed the side trailer panels and bolted the body to the trailer... Check it out...
*
Now that i have it home it is going in my backyard where i can work on it and do the wiring and all the other things i can do from home.
Here is a preliminary view of the motor... the Chrome crank pulley is coming off... Anyone interested in buying it.. this is the original german crank pulley chromed.. this is not EMPI

Now i want to work on the seats a bit... so these are the Polyshell seats that it came with and so comes the transformation...
I have always enjoyed what i think are the most comfortable seats which i had in my '69 bay window bus which are 2008 Hyunday Tiburon seats..
they come with sliding seat tracks and are less than 19" wide so you will know it will fit in a Bug pan..
Also the rear seats i removed the stock buggy seats and replaced with 2009 Hyundai Rear Seats... check it out
I made the plywood panel cut to size just as it is required by Meyers Manx build diagram
Here are the old rear seats:
Now the New Hyundai Tiburon rear seats modified to fit.
To close the gap i will be using these anchors

I jump around quite a bit.. depending on how i feel that day...
So now i decided to work on the Roll bar.. and get rid of the old one
#1 This is what came with my buggy.. At first i thought that i would use it by cleaning it up and getting it powdercoated.... then i changed my mind.
I bought a single roll bar from a guy in Las Vegas who has had it for over 50 years but it didn't have any welded tabs ...
The best way to weld these tabs is to place the roll bar on a flat table and the tabs should lay perpendicular and the fit is near perfect.
This is the Left side (Driver's side) of the roll bar..
There is a reason why the upper tabs are welded facing forward >>
Like this I can give the roll bar a little more rake if i want it to...
The Roll bar from Meyers Manx the upper tabs are facing towards the rear.
This is the Right side (Passenger side) of roll bar.
Now i can adjust the rake if i want to so i can match the windshield frame
#2 Original Meyers Manx Chrome Roll bar
#3 To match the Windshield frame and kinda get away from using a lot of chrome i decided to have this one Chrome Powdercoated...
Later i will show you the tabs i welded that i bought from Lawrence Sanborn of Fab Shop 104

Here i go jumping around again
The previous owner butchered the fan shroud and made throttle tube holes too close to the stock oil cooler so i was forced to make a 3rd hole and make a plate to cover it.
Now to add the finishing touch.. after all its a Manx so why not do it
I polished the manifold because it looked too dull.. then i clear coated it with high heat ceramic clear coating
Now to get rid of the ugly EMPI raised logo on the manifold.. so i used my bench grinder and had a small aluminum plate made with the Manx logo
I posted a Poll on Facebook Manx Club group on which bolts to use on the fan shroud and #2 button head won..
M6 x 16 Button heads

Now to jump around again unto something else for the time being...
This buggy sat outside for so long that the tubes inside the tunnel rotted out so now i have to replace the 5/8" Clutch cable tube,5/16" Stainless Steel throttle cable tube and 1/4" Stainless Steel fuel line.. so here goes nothing
Here is a diagram that i used as reference and i sought assistance from Nate Barrett of Turnkey Manx in Cali.
This is how it is supposed to look when i am done..
I used 5/8" Steel tube and had to use my air die grinder to to make it fit in line with the clutch cable..
I welded the rear of the clutch cable tube
It turned out pretty well for my first time at welding
The 5/16" Stainless Steel accelerator / throttle tube came out great too.
I am replacing my Frame head about 6" from the tunnel to the front where the beam mounts...
I thought just to replace the bag metal out so i made a template out of this flexible cardboard that is free at Costco.. the best
Here is the Ugly rot
Now comes the fun part to measure to know where to cut and then install new piece or rather weld it.
