I am planning to build a wide body beetle on a 74. Am asking for recommendations on tire and wheel sizes that would work. I am planning on using 3'' wider fenders and would like to know what other members used. Need to know what backspacing is going to be needed to clear. Any help is appreciated.

i'm working on a 73 with the same sort of plan, right now i'm looking at a 7" wide with offset (os) for 25-15mm a stock 5.5 34mm offset has a 4.6" backspacing(bs) a 7" 15mm offset has the same 4.6" bs

right now i have a 15x6 41mm os or 5.11" bs i am running a 12mm spacer to give me a 29mm os or 4.64" bs it still rubs a bit at full lock on the suspension arm. i plan to try a 25mm spacer soon that will give me a 16mm os and 4.13 bs

with the 12mm spacer this just fits on the fenders at stockish ride height
a 15x7 with 15 os will the same on the inside and stick out 1.5" more
i would think a 7" with o offset may be what you are looking for

this is a handy tool

the scrub radius with increase as the wheel goes out adding to steering effort and wheel bearing stress

I'm not a huge help, but I'll likely need wide fenders for my Autocross build.

My plan is to get the suspension wheels and tires on the car before buying fenders, since I have no idea at this point how wide I'll need. Aesthetically, I think too wide would look as bad as too narrow. I plan on being pretty low, so I'll need to clear the wheels at full jounce, and/or when the front wheels are at full lock. It'll probably be 6-months before I'm at that point though.

tdralley - that's an awesome car. Do you have any links to a build, or race pictures?
