Tried looking for a post about a similar situation, but my Bosch Voltage Regulator just started smoking and was burning hot when I went to unplug the connections and the battery. I just had my battery on the charger the other day drove it around a few miles then the following day moved it into my garage. After I turned it off it started smoking like crazy. I thought my car was about to go up in flames. No wires melted just the box got super burning hot to the touch.

Any ideas on what might be happening? Should I be looking for a possible short. Did the battery overcharge possibly? I dont want to plug in a new regulator till I know what the hell is going on as in 20 years of owning old vws I have never experienced this issue before or heard of it.

Another thread here:

But that thread describes a much milder issue. Just FYI.
