I've been happy with GoWesty's High Clearance Window Crank Part #: 321-837-581-M. It also clears my Pioneer TS-D1002R 4 inch speakers.

^^^ Indeed. Happy with these so far.

FWIW, Here's my mod hoping for max durability (fill voids with JB Weld for solidity & screw to secure "friction-fit" knob):

These have been great for over 2 years, even after replacing front window seals which snugs everything & created more
drag. Previous experience with OG & replacement cranks was not good...a few months of use & they were toast... Evil or Very Mad

Of course, you can find many opinions and solutions across the forum:

They are cheap enough you should buy a couple of spares for the glove box. I liked the GW high clearance cranks as well, but they can and will be broken by a sufficiently motivated moron (don't ask).

Yep !!! I agree. The issues with the stock Vanagon handles is that they like to break right at the handle. The part you hold when rolling up or rolling down the window.

I had a bunch of Brown and Black VW issued handles that all broke at the same spot but since switching over to the ones Zeitgeist mentions they have worked quite well for a few years. Their a perfect fit too.

I also use the Jetta crank. Nice thing is they come in a brown that matches the early interiors well - yet hold up much better than whatever was in the brown plastic that VW used in the mid-80s.

To paraphrase Chip Monck: 'The brown plastic is not specifically too good'.

x3 on the Jetta crank. Cheap, plentiful, strong, looks natural there, and cheap Smile ...

I have the FLAPS dorman bronco handle on mine. I really like them and they don't look out of place.
