Riverside66,
That is a HUGE improvement from the offered/available replacement. |
You know what....now that you mention it, I do remember ordering another one that was worse than this. It was all shabby looking and malformed. I think I just threw it out it was so bad!
For what it's worth, you might want to give these guys a shot:

I know...it's a crap-shoot, buuut I did just order their steering coupler a few weeks ago, and can vouch for it. It's much better than the other couplers you find out there. _________________ 1977 Standard Beetle -Sold-

So I've discovered a bubbling or hissing sound of what seems to be hot gases in the passenger side air intake, or better yet with the rear deck lid popped open, I can hear vividly a hot "steamy" gas sound coming from either the battery tray or the tubing of the evap system.
Is there a hose connecting the hard lines of the evaporative system on the passenger side?
If it is indeed the battery (scary) what would cause the water to get hot within the battery, a bad battery, a bad voltage regulator?
I do have a video clip, I'll share later today when I get a chance to post it.
Thanks guys, _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Does the battery have a warm or hot feel? Is the battery fluid level over the tops of the cells? Hard to see without an inspection mirror and flashlight, or pull the battery for service and inspection.
I was pleasantly surprised the the Harbor Freight battery load tester actually works pretty well. |

then release the gas cap- it may be leaking pressure- you should be able to tell right away- _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

Does this sound occur all the time?, just after a drive?, in the morning?, after sitting for days? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Long shot, weird thought...
Did you replace all the rubber gas tank vapor lines? There are two metal tubes up in the air intake plenums, one each side. Could there be trapped gasoline in there somehow? Kinda screwy idea, I guess.
As previously posted, did you see if when removing the gas cap you hear a pressure/ vacuum? |

Well cruised a good ways today, got back to the house, hopped out and walked to the rear, hissing and gas pressure sounds again. Popped fuel cap off and.....nothing. Left it off thinking maybe it'd take a minute or two, but nothing changed, sounds continued.
Battery doesn't feel hot or smell.
Perhaps some corrosion in the Evap systems' hard lines? There isn't a hose connection on the passenger side, so I'm curious what's the verdict. _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

You're hearing this sound with the engine off,how long does it continue, could it be your fuel pressure regulator. |
When engine is off, I haven't walked around while the bus is running to see if it does it then as well.
Can't be a regulator, I have the mechanical pump. Seems like gas pressure leaking out of something.
Continues until the motor cools down a bit, as far as I can tell, haven't sat there and read a book or anything, but it lasts a while _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Just throwing darts, maybe engine vent, try removing oil cap. |
I'm grateful for you doing so, a couple knuckleheads are better than one, at least it goes something like that
I've tried the oil cap as well.
Right now, I'm solely believing it to be corrosion in the evap lines or hoses not being tight enough, and with hot pressured gases they are expanding the hoses and escaping. Criminal gases, shall not be contained!
Here's the video I promised and forgot about:

Your bus has gone thru an amazing transformation in the relatively short time you've had it. It will be interesting to hear what the insurance value is versus the price you paid for it. _________________ -Kent-
