OK, I got my hands on a 1990 L model with rubber flooring...I love it! Including all the quirky details. It's like a Vanagon trivia on wheels.
I have one question for the Samba human database: from factory was there anything between the floor and the rubber mats on this model?
Kickpanel height suggests there wasn't anything. But the rubber mats have two raised sections suggesting otherwise. Anyone? _________________ If happiness is being a mechanic, owning a Vanagon is nirvana.

The two raised sections in the rear have two long molded strips of the factory deadener material - the stuff found under every square inch of the carpeted models - under them.
There is some sound deadening material under the rubber mats in the front foot wells as well. Far less than other models, but it's not just sheet metal under there either.

Costco sells a diamond plate patterned product that may be similar. I have had this on my shop floor for 6 years and it's awesome.

I haven't used it in my van because my interior is tan. |

Thanks for the replies to my question, here is the original rubber mat in Vanagon L.
Here is how I got it, bare floor:
Someone made a good point about moisture, add some rocks or sand under the mat and rust moves in. I think I'll make some barrier on mine.
Here is my originally carpeted van that I replaced with rubber mat I cut to size:
This mat is horse bedding from True Value so very heavy duty, cutting took some effort with utility knife, they sell it in different sizes:

If anyone wants the original formed rubber Guenzl Classic Parts sells them:

Hoping to jump in on this question. I purchased a used front and aisle section of oem rubber flooring a couple of years ago.
I have a 91 GL with oem carpeting. I plan to remove the aisle and front carpeting. Do I need to or should I also remove the sound deadening material and underlayment after removing the carpeting?
Is the Vanagon front rubber flooring as it was in busses and just lays directly on the metal floor?
Thank you |

It does. It is noisier without the factory sound deadener but the fitted rubber mat doesn't fit nearly as well with it installed. |

Yeah, I am fortunate to have gotten some great OEM front and aisle rubber flooring, but getting an OEM rear may take a generation...the aftermarket stuff may work well with the stock insulation underneath.
Just FYI:
The OEM rear passenger rubber floor mat VW part numbers are as follows:
255 863 731Q (041 for Black) Floor Cover for Pass. Compart. Front
255 863 733N (041 for Black) Floor Cover for Pass. Compart. Rear
As you can see above the floor covering came in 2 pieces and I believe they were stock on the Vanagon "L" models and perhaps diesels. VW Classic parts does not have them in their online availability check. So for those wanting, its a used search. Probably in Europe as the VW Commercial market was larger there. _________________ ~Bryan

I know this product has been suggested somewhere here before, but I can't find it. So I am documenting my Traffic Master Rubber Garage Tile install here. I put this in because I have a seven passenger that I use about twice a year with the middle seat and the rest of the year without it. So I wanted to have flooring that I could convert to use the extra bench when needed. The rubber tile is 18" square. I installed it over the factory insulation and rails. I centered the tiles on the floor rails, so I can remove that row of tiles to install the middle seat. These tiles are thick enough to "bridge" some of the flooring gaps that result underneath, yet allowed me to reinstall the factory door threshold metal. Two boxes of floor tile provided just enough material to cover the entire center section, extending all the way under the bench. The Home Depot price is $30 a box.

I saw this pic and thought I'd suggest that you might want to investigate what's under your rear seat kick panel. I found that behind the warped vinyl is really nice beech wood. It could probably be stained to match your wooden wall panels.
