That's a rebuilder's plate, I remember when Sears (and others) used to sell remanufactured long blocks with those tags riveted on. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Yeah I thought that's what it might be. I've seen ones that had code painted on the back of the case. Sears huh _________________ 1964 Notchback

A hearty congratulations on taking the plunge to score this 1969 T34! It's an impressive unmolested one that any VW collector would be proud to own. It has an extensive history that needs to be preserved too. Do some research, contact the previous owners, and document everything. First thing might be to order a VW birth certificate to learn more about where it was delivered originally. Those KARMANN side badges were only mounted in a few countries that didn't allow side lights. I'd bet the birth certificate will help clear that up. |

Bet it's a Canadian destination car. Every one I've seen like that later than '64 had those badges. If memory serves, they are a Type 34 only part number- slightly bigger than Type 1 badges... or some design difference. I could be wrong but I seem to remember they are subtly different. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Hey Lee,
the birth certificate is on order. I have reached out to a couple names that come up in the car's history. No responses yet. I really want to speak the the owner that had it since 2004- He entrusted the car to to the guy I bought it from named Scott but he really didn't know much about it, but had done maintenance on the car over the years for the PO. I saw older photos on Scott's office wall of the car so he was familiar with it for some time.
I'll do some more research and be sure to document what I find. _________________ 1964 Notchback

that scar on the side is nasty. Honestly, stuff like that scares me off paying a lot for a car. Stuff like that can turn into a full blown re-paint for cars with no real body seams
If it's single stage paint (looks like it is) it needs to be taken to bare metal in that fender, as small an area as possible, until you get back to where there is no damage. It needs to be body worked below paint height, Then the best color match artist on earth needs to mix the paint. Then spray a lot of paint on the panel and color sand it. Probably light color sand the whole rest of the car too, to match the shiny
you really need to get it to metal and see how bad it is, which is not fun. Would be easier on a normal car with more seams...
not trying to be all doom and gloom, someone with skills can do it _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

Yeah I plan on taking it to a shop nearby that has done some work on friends VW's that came out real nice and get thier opinion. Not sure I am going to find "the best color match artist on earth" tho _________________ 1964 Notchback

honestly - once it's running and driving fine, I would take it to some high end restoration shops, and see what they say, see what they would recommend. I'm talking classic Porsche classic Ferrari shop. They will likely have an old man that knows paint like no one else. Bring that guy coffee and donuts and ask him if he does any side work _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

yeah solid advice- I have a couple shops in the area that will at least provide names of qualified paint shops in the area i'm sure. I really hope I can avoid having the whole car resprayed not only due to cost but I like it with some chips and dings so I don't have to fear driving it or parking it anywhere. _________________ 1964 Notchback

The only thing about a Canadian equipped car is that it wouldn't have amber tail lights, they would be solid red - i'm pretty sure, anyway,
Regardless - Awesome car! _________________ Tom Reay

Looks to be a nice car. I'm kind of glad I sold mine before they became popular. Yeah, you're going to want a body shop see what's hiding under that bondo pop. Don't know if you're going to want them to look at the dent on top, or accept it as part of it's aging process. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Been doing very routine things on the car so far while I wait for this winter to finally go away.
Going through and made a list of small parts and things to fix. I am fortunate enough to already have much of the 'common' type 3 maintenance parts
Did a basic tune up ( this engine has an 009 distributor that will be going soon) Actually the entire motor will be swapped out with a fresh one I already have and I will freshen this one up. It has no Tstat and is just filthy.
Replaced fuel hose with modern type
Got 3d printed sun visor clips as they were held on by safety wire
Got a 1600 L bage for the rear to replace the incorrect one added at some point
Got some rubber bits and new carb linkages from ISP as those were really worn
Swapped out the severely dry rotted white walls with some Pedrini wheels I had in storage. I will use these till I get new 3/4 " WW and fresh caps and embellishers

Thanks Erik I actually like how they look too. Pedrini's are the best looking 914 wheel and the silver powder goes will with this light blue. I do like how a 195 tire feels as well
In other news the scar on the left rear quarter has no filler and maybe just a result of poor prep when it had a respray which I believe happened in the 80's. still going to get it looked at and fixed. _________________ 1964 Notchback

Yeah nothing too wild for sure. Now to just figure out how to get the rear center caps to clear without using wheel spacers. You'd think someone would have come up with a center cap that looks like the 914 caps but is a 1/4" deeper for type 3 rear axles. Fronts are on now and look good! _________________ 1964 Notchback

Been picking away at small maintenance stuff
-replaced shocks
-replaced fuel hoses with barricade, moved plastic filter out of engine bay
-one of the fuel inlet tubes pulled right out while doing this so those will be getting tapped for barb fittings like my other 2 type 3's.
- replaced steering damper lubed beam and adjusted torsion play
- replaced brakes all around- did not do rubber hoses yet but will be doing that soon.
-swapped the 009 distributor for a 123 ignition unit VW-R-V. The 123 is pricey but well built and has 16 advance curves. Glad I pulled the 009 as it didn't even have the o-ring on the shaft and now of course I have vacuum back . I had to heat the end of the vacuum tube to fit on the port of the 123 ignition but it worked out OK. Only thing that drives me mad about the unit is the switch for advance curves is located underneath and you must pull the unit to switch it which is a PIA. I want to try a couple other curves
Things I am planning next are ;
track down odd squeak from under the dash- when I hit a bump I hear it and can't quite figure out what it is. Wiper assembly perhaps??
Remove repair glove box which has a fist sized hole in the left side
take the car by a shop I found a couple towns over from me to look at spot on left rear, inner tire well respray and both hoods underneath have been painted black which I don't like.
Before long this motor will come out and be swapped with one I have that is ready to go. Its a 1600 with CW crank and ported heads _________________ 1964 Notchback
