Riverside, Kent,
Thank you gentlemen, it's been fun.
Update on the hissing sounds, battery is getting hot, though I haven't witnessed any mess from it so far. What's up with that, irregular voltage? Bad battery?

Could be an internal short, but then it would keep heating until it killed the battery.Check you charging system may be over charging.

Just a thought. Check your trans after you get out of the car. There have been poster who have their trans oil bubbling after a drive.

Cheers

Hot, bubbly battery is resting at 13.8 volts...

Sad That sounds like a bad regulator- check the water level and put a voltage gauge on the battery with motor revved up a little.

That's what I was afraid of, I noticed last night that when I use my turn signals, it intermittingly flashes with the blinker indicator light?
Do the replacement units fit inside the original housing or is the replacement regulators a self sealed (housed) unit?

I've seen both the sealed unit with a pigtail connector for the original VW connector, and a few NOS originals here on the classifieds.

seems Stu had one that was adjustable for voltage.

I'm going to try and use a good used unit out of a bay here in town, depending if it's reasonable compared to aftermarket units.
Any weight in opinion between mechanical and the newer style voltage regulators?
Also, is there any difference between 55 amp and 70 amp alternator regulators?

you can use the 70 amp alt with the 55 but the regulator will stop the out put at 55 if you go the other way- the alt will eventually be over worked and fail/--I've been told--- not having done it myself-- They have different cooling boots too.

Tuesday with time away from work, I'll be able to stop by a friends shop to verify if indeed, the voltage regulator is bad or rather the alternator. And seemingly and hopefully, not the pair.

Yowza!
Yesterday before heading over to Bob's shop, I checked the voltage on the main battery while idling, 16.9v. Scared enough with that, I don't even want to know how high it was revving through gears!
Once arrived, chitchatting about the good ole days when you could by a complete KD motor complete from clutch to exhaust for $400 in a crate from VW dealers, Bob handed me an original Bosch unit regulator.
A few minutes later, voltage running was at 13.5v, good signs of hopefully my voltage woes. Checked again today. All good. Aside...(always has to be something else) I do believe the bus motor is running a little warmer, possibly with correct, even voltage? The past few months I've had an issue with dieseling upon shut off, all last night and today, no dieseling.
Reason being again, besides the warmer motor, I'm getting a light smoke coming up from the passenger side air scoop.
I'm thinking oil on the heat exchanger, plausible?
Battery is no longer getting hot, or crazy voltage on and off, so naturally, I now have a new concern!

With the installment of a new, correctly functioning voltage regultor, the engine was amiss. Shakey and flat.
Getting out my timing light along with my awesome tachometer, idle was high (1,100rpms) and timing was 12* ATDC.
Time for some adjustments.
Idle is now at 900-925, with timing at 8* ATDC. Book calls for 10* but I swear by it, the engine likes it between 6-8*, keeping it there with summer approaching.
Heber Springs show in two weeks, checked thermostat, trans bolts, valve covers, removed bottom tins to inspect push rod tubes, and while messing with everything else, I finally swapped out my leaky oil pressure sending unit.
Amazing what one change can do to the performance of the engine. It needed to be done anyhow, compliance can be a burden on the tail end.
Cheers,

Though it never monsooned as projected, the forecast kept a lot of folks home, so the turn out was pretty poor.
But with limited numbers comes delightful surprises!

Now I feel like a fool, but rather than accepting recognition for best bus in the show (I was the only one present in Bay Window) I accepted this monumental trophy as recognition of my hard work, my dedication, and my pride of putting effort forth for resurrecting my bay window!
This was yesterday, headed out for my two hour drive to my campsite next to Greers Ferry Lake.

Met a few good folks, learned a new campsite, and brought home first place! Laughing
With weather cooperating next year, I hope to see the typical 70+ cars, and bring it home again!

Congratulations on bringing home the hardware!

Please remove both hoses from the distributor and rev it until it won't advance any more (likely ~3500 RPM), hopefully it stops at 28*-30*, any more and your engine won't like it for long. The idle timing doesn't count unless you never touch the gas pedal when driving Wink

Well, now that you mention it, it does have a motor in the rear Cool
Bus daddy,
I'll check it again. Don't want to be having a breakdown, a mental one at that.

Early bird this morning, so I found time this afternoon to do some diagnosis on the bus engine.
Hoses off, revved to 3500rpms, found a nice steady 28*. So I hooked everything back up.
The only I don't like is with the idle noted, the resting or idling timing reads 12* ATDC.
Bus runs cool as a cucumber though...

If it idles OK don't worry, the high speed advance is what will kill it if it's wrong. I wonder if the retard stop is damaged or someone has swapped in an incorrect vacuum can on the distributor?. -12 sounds pretty close for a 74 though, to comply with smog laws VW retarded the idle to increase flow and get the exhaust good and hot while idling, it may be what the distributor is meant to do.

I had Bill rebuild the correct 205 distributor. NOS canister from a guy off the classifieds here out of Ohio.
Stock with California emission timing was 10* ATDC.
Last time I timed the distributor (hoses on) I had as mentioned 6* ATDC, and the drivability and torque was noticeable, but so was a warmer dipstick.
Also noted that the bus seemed to consume (a very minor oil leak out of the fuel pump), 3/4 quart of oil over 200 miles. Lots of hills and downgrades, seems like I was running warming this past weekend than I thought.
