It is an interesting one, I will have to get out the VW Type 2 specification guide, as the Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system was from what I have seen, standard in North America (due to emissions rules, rather topical considering the current news headlines on VW! - I wonder where they wired in the "defeat device" on the T2 ), whilst I think (but need to check when) there were dual carb and FI options available on the Type 4 motor for the bus elsewhere in the world (and the Type 1 1600 remaining very popular in Europe over the Type 4 engined model).
So a 2 litre twin carb Type 4 model option in Germany is a definitely maybe. I would imagine the engine in the Automuseum was once a reference point in the engineers and draughtsmans office. _________________ 1965 Type 1 Deluxe (1200cc)

Very true - yes indeed their were 2 liter dual carb versions out there. I made a funny in the respect that there are many a story on how wrong the tags in the VW museum are. Ive never heard a reason why this is? So it just looks like the factory is wrong on their own product in their own museum.
This motor is either wrong or a combination of things. We may never know. But I would still love to own it and have in my collection! _________________

Since these pics I've put about 6,000 km on her. At least 500 km on some remote logging roads. Gone to 2 music festivals. Gotten stuck in the mud and had to rev the engine up and pop the clutch a half dozen times to get unstuck.
I've also changed the coil, distributor, and wires since these pics were taken, just for fun.
Great summer with the bus. I think I'm feeling one more road trip before my insurance runs out in 6 weeks.

JAD Machine built 2175cc. Aluminum bubble top case, 94mm Mahle B P&C, CB 044 heads, CB 78.4mm crank, CB Hbeam conecting rods, Engle 110 cam, Silverline main bearings, Mahle HD cam bearings, chromoly push rods, solid rockers w/swivel feet adjusters, Weber IDF40s, real 009 w/pertronix Bosch 55 amp alternator, 1.5qt deep sump, 180* oil t-stat, oil filter, 6 pass cooler w/fan, Parker hoses and fittings, stock heater boxes, Bugpack merged header and an EMPI Phat Boy muffler. That's attached to a '73 002 with a Sachs clutch disc and a heavy duty pressure plate.

Ive waited to post my motor here. Ive wanted it to be clean and all flashy to do so. Its not perfect but its nicer than it was.

For the guys who have painted/coated their engine parts, is there any pieces you DONT want to paint? Or that you wish you would have used a different coloring process on? ie paint instead of powdercoat or ceramic instead of paint?
Curious because Im having some parts powdercoated and ceramic coated for my rabbit pickup build. May as well double up and have both engines done all together! _________________ 2012 Tiguan 4motion

to now (after full rebuild):
"Stock" rebuild: HAM heads, Mahle 94MM pistons, stock rebuilt rods, AA Cylinders, Web Cam 142, solid lifters, chromoly push rods, 10MM swivel feet adjusters, dual Weber 40 IDF's, Malpassi Filter King, Bosch 205S dizzy w/Pertronix ignition, all tin replaced, and running @ 7.4/7.5 compression. _________________ 1977 Standard Beetle -Sold-

I tried to edit my 2015 post to add the following photos, but the site won't let me as too much time has lapsed since I posted them.
I was back in Wolfsburg in August 2017 and made another visit to the VW Automuseum whilst there. I just now found these additional photos I took of the Type 4 cutaway engine I shot whilst back there, so am posting as they are a good reference point.
