Okay, so I'm pretty new to all this but I'm trying to kill rust as I come across it.
I started removing the old paint and patches of rust on the floor of my passenger side and found rust inside the lip the panel goes in. How the hell do I get in there to get it out? Phosphoric acid? Can it be salvaged or do I need to think about replacing or at least pulling it back??
The floor looks like it could be easily patched, at least to my newb eyes. Thoughts??
Also found rust here, on the wheel well by the jacking point (this is the front passenger side behind the wheel). I peeled back the bad spots but seems to go all the way through two layers of panels. What's the inside panel apart of? I thought I could just weld patch a piece in but now I'm not so sure since it's clearly two pieces together that's rusted. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would use phosphoric acid on the front floor.
I refer to vw's being made out of panels that are for strength or that just have the purpose of a enclosure so from my point of view that is why you have the two overlapping panels.
I would cut out the thin piece from end to end and then clean up the thicker piece. If the rest of the thick piece is really good I would patch in part of it or if not replace the entire piece from end to end. As long as you do a decent job ,I would not worry about replicating the patches so they attach exactly like the factory job. The factory most likely spot welded the two together and put a thick bead of sealer on the seams.
Can you do a overlap joint of the jack support on the inside? Otherwise I guess you will have to but weld it. The inside structure of the jack support should tell you how you will be able to repair it. _________________ My beetle is not competing with your beetle. I have the yellow beetle in my town.
