Like the title states, I want to use dual oil bath air cleaners for my weber 34's (on a 1600 SP engine)
I plan on shortening or removing the snorkel.
wondering if I will need to open them up more to allow for more intake/airflow?

motor size and engine bay pics would help-- I'm doing the same on a bus for the desert, but using stock carb (pic 34) and the dual rubber manifold to a pair of "thing" air cleaners. But having trouble as all my air cleaners point the same way and I need a left side one to do what I want- So good luck with that and mock it up so your cuts aren't fatal to the plan. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. I get what you're saying about pointing in the wrong directions....
that's why I was going to remove the snorkel where I can spin them around to which ever direction clears the best. |

Some says that the fan will take away air from the right carburator when its pointing that way. _________________ I got a historic car, every scratch got a history...

Here's the engine in my wife's '67 Convertible where I used modified '65 air cleaners. The snouts were shortened with the base of one side turned upside down to be opposite hand. I had to re-position both snouts and rotate the air cleaners to get them as close to the fan housing as possible.

could you explain in more detail (or pix) what you mean by "with the base of one side turned upside down to be opposite hand" |

Picture showing they are opposite hand.
This allows them to wrap around the fan housing. It took four air cleaners to make these two. _________________ 1965 Double Cab

Removing the snorkels altogether will be the easiest method to get them to fit. You'll end up with a rectangular opening in the side of the air cleaner bottom bowl. You can widen the opening maybe 1/2" on each side to accomodate the slightly larger air intake volume from the 34mm carb throats, then rivet/braze on some cleanly cut perforated metal or other sturdy screen from the inside. Paint eveything semi-gloss black.

Shot of a friend's 1500 engine with 34ICTs and some 36hp air cleaners. Engine has 36hp doghouse-style shroud which enables some extra space compared to the wider stock 1500 or 1600 fan shrouds with the side air outlet snouts. 2 more shots of the air cleaners in my gallery.

Same here. Except I centered the flange that connects to the carb.
