i think if you want to get the most out of bigger engine
get a 75-79 091 tranny & change the bell housing to fit the type 1 engine |
an 002 transmission with a 4.57 R&P will give you almost exactly the same gearing as an 091. |
I bought this exact trans set up from a guy that said he was running a 2007cc engine. He was too happy to get rid of it and switch back to a standard 002. You'd think that a high hp engine would be the ticket for this but most folks I've talked with advise against it on anything type1 powered. I'll have a 2300 with @100 ftlbs so hopefully this trans doesn't disapoint me as it has the previous owner. _________________ One day as a lion, or a lifetime as lamb

Try http://www.baja.com/kombi/bustech6.htm
This will let you compare the effects of using different ring & pinions/gears on your RPM range. On an early bay I would opt for the 4.57 R&P, as there is no point in putting in a 2.0L motor to do 60MPH everywhere. My '71 with 1.6L single port does just fine below 60, but is putting on the RPM above that (although it is quite upto the task) and I don't intend on tearing the motor apart after 20,000 miles. A larger motor should be able to move the bus without the strain a stock motor would experience, having more torque on tap. Usually a 'freeway flyer' just has a taller 4th gear, and that can be a strain on the motor if used at low speeds, as the other gears are then badly placed in the RPM range. A R&P swap keeps all the factory gear spacing, just moves the shift points.

That thing seems super nifty at first...but after inputting the gear ratios and tire size of my application, according to the chart it'll be doing 28mph at redline in first gear.
I know my speedometer is way off...but there's no WAY.
And 123mph at the top of 4th gear? _________________ Percy: '77 sage Westy, 2.0L FI (GD), 091 trans

|
|
I have a 2027 in my '69 Westy, which has the stock transmission,
and stock size Hancook tires.
I struggle to go more than 65 mph--the engine seems to be revving very high, to the point where I'm always wanting to let off a bit. I do not have a tach installed, but I'd bet at 65 the engine is turning around 4000-4500
rpms or so--which is probably OK and where the meat of the HP and torque start showing up--but it just FEELS like it's pushing too hard, and when I let off to about 55 mph, it settles in and sounds and feels like it's
"supposed to"---and this is after driving busses and beetles and ghias for 25 yrs plus, and this bus on long trips on the freeway, 3,000 miles or more.
I would like to see how a late model 6-rib would "feel" with the 2027 in the '69 Westy--but it's a LOT of $ and time and WORK to "test" this theory!
So for now, I'm hanging in the slow lane going 55!
Nice looking bus and engine--the new owner should be very happy,
no matter what transmission is in it!
cheers........... _________________ '69 Westy Camper

The owner has told me that money is getting tight so for now we're going to stay with the original tranny and stock tires. i can always work the issue later down the road. Thanks for all the input guys. I did go ahead and order the stainless heater hose. That was a great tip and I appreciate it. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

YOU need to convert to imperial (click 'options' tab), then you will see 19MPH in 1st and a lot short of 123MPH in 4th. It's as good as the data imputed. _________________ 1967 Ghia

the factory rev limiter on a my 1971 DP was 74mph. I believe that equated to about 5400 rpm so your statement is very close.

I have a 1961 bus purchased a adjustable lowered front beam from Bus Boys, correct shocks and for the rear using a Karmen Ghia axel with proper arm and using VW bug motor and vw bug tranny. Currently having new link & king pins installed and a front sway bar as the bus is all over the road with a "SLIGHT" MOVENT OF THE STEERING WHEEL.
tHE OTHER PROBLEM IS THAT THERE IS A LOUD BANG EVERY 4 OR SO CAR LENGTHS IF THE ROAD HAS EVEN THE SLIGHTEST IRREGLARITY "BUMP"
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO ENJOY A NORMAL RIDE??
