| My standard beetle has just recently started shaking consistently at speeds of 60 or higher. The whole front end was just replaced maybe 1000 miles ago with new moog parts and I just checked it all and it's solid. Is this a wheel balance issue? The shaking seems to be coming from the right side and it shakes the whole car and pulls it to the left, but the shaking is periodic. I'll get it to sixty it will shake then smooth out then shake again consistently. The tires don't look to be wearing irregularly, but this just started over the weekend. Any thoughts? |

broken belts or cords in either or both frt tires...or balance issue
jack up and spin each tire and look for any runout....or out of round....if found ...replace that tire.
if no runout or out of round found....balance both frt tires |

What was included in the "The whole front end was just replaced" work?
I don't think a wheel balancing problem would make the car pull to the left but I've been wrong before. |

| shake rattle and roll...vw's mantra. as for the issue. check the breaks for the pulling issue. and for the shake I kinda like chockalate.....check&retighten the wheel bearings, check as in pull drum/rotor all see if there good or dead then replace/regreessee if nessary add some greessee(i like the thin syn stuff) and make sure there tight. not snug but tight then back off a little bearings like this have to have a preload. not just a little. as I recall arkwuled just sent out wheel bearing tightening instructions, you might check thier site. or... a good manul. I do mine by feal but Ive done it all my life, most people thing there just turn the nut till tire dont shake any more with your hand. that aint it. probably another half turn. |

For background. the reason I asked what was replaced on your front in is I experienced bad shaking on my front end, usually at speed while braking. I thought it was the brakes so I decide to replace them. While I was at it I decided to upgrade to discs. When I was tightening the last caliper bolt I noticed this:

| The ball joints, tie rods, shocks, bearings, damper were all replaced. Everything is super solid. I am going to have the tires balanced tomorrow as it can't hurt. I will check the bearings though, I may have adjusted them wrong. What is the correct procedure for tightening the spindle nut so that it is not too loose or too tight? |

| Just an update for anyone who might need it later on, I solved the shaking issue! After having my front wheels balanced, and replacing my rear shocks and alot of head scratching nothing changed. I finally decided to rotate my front and rear tires and lo and behold the problem was the rear right tire! I never once thought of this, but about a day before this problem started I put slime tire sealant in that tire on my way home from school. I only drove a mile or two after putting it in and then it sat all night. My guess is that because I didn't drive it very far with the slime, it hardened in one clump on the tire and the resulting loss of balance caused the shaking. My dad followed me on the highway and said that he could see that tire hopping 2-3 inches off the ground! Lesson learned I guess. Am I right in saying that you must drive for a while after putting the slime in? It sealed the tire fine, I think Im gonna take that tire off and really see whats going on in there. |

#1 Since it started right after adding the Slime, that should've been a really good hint.
#2 On the other hand, a mile or two is a lot of revolutions, so I'm surprised the Slime did not distribute evenly. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I have a very similar issue with mine (even the same side and pull to the left) except mine starts at ~44mph. I might go and rotate the tires too for kicks and giggles. Who knows, it might solve the issue on mine too.
EDIT: Front left wheel was slightly out of round, shaking issue solved _________________ Post...edit...post...edit....
