After all that, I do suspect that the alternator might need rebuilding. In testing the voltage with the engine on, and revving the throttle at the carb, there's a vibration noise at higher revs that sounds like it could be coming from the alt. Maybe the alt bearing?
With all the problems I've read concerning the new reman Bosch alt's, perhaps having mine rebuilt is the way to go?

Agreed! Aeromech slowed my roll with that one 
I didn't find anyone who could rebuild the boosters (kept mine just in case tho). FWIW, the Wolfsburg West booster works well and fit correctly with no modifications needed.

After what seems like forever, I finally sourced a rebuilt alternator, and installed it this morning, along with a new-to-me alternator tin, adjustment bolt cover, and a homemade alternator sealing ring. A VERY big thank you to Aeromech and SGKent for taking time to help me obtain the template for that sealing ring!

Once I finished up with the alternator install, I took her across town for a victory run. Ran beautifully.

You're doing a great job in bringing it back to 100% mechanical condition! Nice work.
Any thoughts about sourcing a used FI system and putting it back in place? That bus really deserves it, since it's so original. If you do source the original fuel injection system, you could hire Colin (amskeptic) to stop by and assist you with the install. He's been wintering in Florida.

I'd love this bus to have the original FI system in place, but I really haven't given it much consideration yet. Though I have seen some of the FI parts in the classifieds and my eyes widen at the thought of what the total cost would be to bring it back 100%.
I could see slowly collecting pieces here and there over time, but I also don't really know what to look for.
It also needs new door seals (right, left, and sliding), window rubber (front right and left), I still need to inspect and possibly replace the CV joints, probably the wheel bearings as well.
Oh yea, and those rust spots. Yea, that's been on my mind. I did pick up a wire wheel and some primer recently, but I don't know much about rust repair (other than remove the rust, and paint it). Since I'm not planning on repainting the entire bus anytime soon, I'll prob just be rattle canning it. Do they make Agate Brown spray paint?

On the door seals/rubber. Buy the best you can find. There's several threads with peoples feedback about the best rubber to get. Bus Depot seems to be carrying some good, quality rubber made in Germany. Cip-1 also has had some good feedback on their German door seals as well. Just DON'T buy anything rubber made in Brazil. It's the entry level quality and it's fit is terrible. I bought the German door seals from Wolfsburg West. While it fits perfectly, the rubber is stiff and you have to really shut the door with force. It's relaxed a little bit after 8 months but I'm still not happy with it.
Anytime you're looking for parts, it's ALWAYS a good idea to search the forums or ask a question about which parts to buy and where to get it. Never buy the "cheapest" part. You'll be sorry due to quality, fit and aggravation in trying to make it work.
On the rust question, search rust repair or rust treatment on the forums as well. There's some great info and ideas there. The first choice would be to cut out all the cancer and weld in new metal. Your next choice would be to treat the cancer and then seal it to prevent it from returning or spreading. Again, some great information in the forums.
On the fuel injection, I think you'd be very happy with it vs. that carb that not many bus veterans care for. There's lots of regular bay contributors that are very knowledgeable with it. Over the years, I've read many threads where people reinstalled a freshly overhauled system, got it dialed in and were thrilled. As you said, you can do some reading to get familiar with it and what you need to source. The classifieds here are a good source. The other factor in reinstalling it is it would add value to the bus. You never know when you may have to sell it (hopefully not) and the VW's that bring the most money are the ones that are original like delivered new.

Thanks Sambo! Man you've been busy! Your bus is comin along really nicely. I remember seeing your first post, and followed it for awhile just to see if you were able to get it. It's really lookin good!
And yea, feel free to hit me up if you have any questions when you start working on your brakes (the only thing I didn't do was replace the hard lines).

| It's a good, informative and supportive community here, and it's fun to check out others projects and ideas. And always to see some others processes of completing jobs on their buses. Yes I'm biased, I like the buses. But I see a bug for town commuting in at the most of couple years in my future. |

It's been awhile since the last update. I parked the bus for about a year in my garage after the engine started making a racket and I just didn't have much time to look into it. Well the racket turned out to be hydraulic lifters which just needed to be pumped back up. Driving the bus for 30 min on the highway at about 55 fixed that issue, and that was a few weeks ago. I've been driving it on short trips for errands, which reminded me that the clutch was slipping. I had long suspected that oil was making it's way into the clutch area, and so, with a friend and a little extra time, we removed the engine...

After I removed the engine and inspected the bell housing of the transmission, I noticed some end play from the input shaft. I've searched, and found some others reporting the same thing. Some say a little play is normal/by design. Others say it's not.
Anyone seen this? Advice needed. Here's a video for reference:

Been slowly tearing down my 2.0. This engine was running well (ran rich, but was easy to start, idled well, no visible smoking) and originally this was just going to be a clutch job, buuut I figured it was better to assume that it had never been torn down, and to find out what condition it was in since it was already out...

This is the first time I've disassembled any engine, so I don't really know what I'm seeing here (as far as condition is concerned) other than it looks like it needs a good cleaning!
I'll be pulling the hydraulic lifters shortly, and then possibly the oil pump, but then the teardown will stop until I get my vw yoke for my stand.
What do you guys think? Anything stand out to you? Any signs of damage I should be concerned with?
