Hello! I'm building a baja out of a 67. Will be ball joint front with thing spindles and arms and class 11 Bilstein reservoir 7100 shocks front back(IRS rear)
With the thing beams I am already getting some needed ground clearance. Will I still need to cut and turn the front end to add preload? The bilstein rep told me those shocks are going to keep things a bit stiff up front already.
I prefer the front end be able to travel up and down equally and not be limited on the droop because of preload, but I always hear of people cutting and turning, even with raised spindles. Thoughts?
Thanks!!!

IMHO the raise you get from Thing spindles is as high as you can go without widening the beam. Any more and you will get a chance to test your roll cage.

3" is my personal limit. If you go higher, go wider.

Thank you for responding but I think you must understand. I'm not looking to go any higher. My question is, is the preload necessary once you're already at the ride height that you like?

I use to race on Thing beams in Score and I felt no need to cut and turn them. I used Bilsteins and stock Thing spring packs with sway-a-way additional spring inserts. I have two ex race cars with Thing beams I just use for recreational and those beams are set up the same way. I use hard stops for droop and upper limits on modded German ball joints.

Thank you! I think I'll be good then. Appreciate it!!

When I built mine, thing spindles and thing springs that are stiffer than bug ,I also added the adjusters too so I Could tune the ride appropriately.

I have it turned up I think about 1/2" or so and the ride is good. But have a heavy full body bug full of gear most of the time. A light baja probably doesn't need any additional preload.

Thanks for the info, my bug will be pretty heavy as well.
