looks very nice, good work. Keep an eye on the lug nuts for the first 100 miles or so, re-torque as needed.
1st Dove blue lowlight I have seen. Love to see more interior pics. Smile

Thanks Darrell. The interior is a long way from being there.

I'm in the process of sandblasting the seat frames now. Then I'll need to decide on where I'm going to go for the seat material. Australia might be too long to wait. I saw Lenny advertising lowlight interiors recently. My buddies put together a TMI interior that looked pretty decent as well.

ha. Smile That didnt take long. Happens to the best of us! Looks like it has been several colors in its life. Im sure you will appreciate it more once it is back to driving condition.
Good news is you have steering wheel, dash pieces, grab handle, ashtray...pretty complete. Is your nose badge correct or the late 2 piece?

Yes, This escalated quickly. I have the correct one piece nose badge.

I think I'll need to find a better pair of the window brackets (regulators) that hold the glass bottom into the door. Mine are pretty rough.

I assume these are not the same as coupes?

I would be very surprised if the mechanism for the window glass were different...just the shape of the glass.

If you haven't downloaded this parts manual you'll find this a lot of use: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/1958_...s_List.pdf
...and of course, (I know you will have used these already Trevor but good for others who don't know about them) the workshop body manual and convertible top manual: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/1960_karmann_ghia_workshop_manual.php

Coupe and cabriolet door regulators are the same. There were a lot of changes in the 59 Ghia as VW prepared for the redesigned 60 Ghia. Some parts changed during the 59 Ghia production as new 60 model parts were being integrated during assembly, so you will have to match up your old part to replacements to be sure you use the right part. For example my original paint 59 Ghia has aluminum hinges.

I plan on replacing the motor with this vintage speed 36hp. I bought this motor here on the Samba a couple years ago. It was originally built by KCW for their dove blue pre A.

The doors weren't too bad. Some rust bubbles along the tops but otherwise the bottoms were solid. The hole on the top right of the top picture was filled.

I believe the original colour was L-431, based on the a note from the PO.

I'm going to stick with dove blue, mostly because I originally intended to only fix what needed to be fixed, not tear it down and respray everything. My preference would be go back to original, but my budget dictates I stick with what is here.

The paint went on really nicely. Very happy with the outcome. Looks great on all those curves! With the trunk lids and doors off there really isn't that much car left to shoot.

I was very surprised to have a private message from the previous, previous owner a few days ago. The power of the Samba! The PPO owned the car from 1988 to 1990 when he sold it to a VW dealer. Then the car was bought by the PO and driven to Quebec. The message was:

"I bought the car from its second owner, it was orange and had been sitting in a shed with a dirt floor since 1970. I replaced the rocker panels and reinforcement stiffeners as well as the lower quarter panels in front and rear of the doors. I also placed it on a 1970 Ghia IRS pan and put in the newer seats. I put brake drums off a 1967 beetle on to change back to wide 5 The car was originally a light metallic blue. I sold the car in 1990 at Bow-Mel Volkswagen in Duncan,BC and it went to Quebec with a Westfalia. Nice to see it is still alive".

I also have a picture from the PO showing the car stripped down and getting ready for a paint job, so this car has now been painted at least 4 times since new. Once orange and 3 times dove blue.

This is really a great story. Duncan is literally 3 islands over from where I live. The pictures of the car from 28 years ago show a beautiful looking convertible.

In the first photo you can clearly see the interior mirror and waffle visors! I can also see the interior roof handles on the front bow. Those were tough pieces to replace.. and by tough I mean expensive Very Happy
