A close friend of mine has an SA relative, with an urge to visit and explore the country. When he finally gets there, I will make sure he has your contact info. He, like everyone, loves pizza.

Very cool to have a bus that was driven by that man 50-something years ago. Not often we get those sort of in-person history lessons.

It's a B&O logo, but I'm not sure from when. The signwriting on this bus was done in at least 2 layers. South Africa only got TV in the mid-1970s, so all the TV references must date to after 1975. You can see the yellow flash on the sides of the bus are in a more modern style than the original signwriting.

The bus is just a display and not running, although it wouldn't take more than a few weekends of work to get it back on the road. Tommy and I have exchanged contacts. Maybe I must jump this bus up the priority list and surprise him further next time he comes to visit.

I'm always happy to meet travellers and itinerant bus lovers. Please do share my name with anyone coming to the southern tip of Africa.

Tommy filled me in on interesting details like confirming the bus was used for home service and giving me the name of the owner of Oxford Radio. I love the stories that go with my old cars, but am frustrated that I know so little of their history. This was a big day for both Tommy and I! I can only imagine what it must feel like to have a ghost from your past step into your life 50 years later!

This is so crazy how fast this bus came to the surface!
I was in a fly shop (Dan Baileys) a few weeks ago looking at some old photos on the wall and came across this "Field and Stream" picture and instantly had a bonner for it.
I asked an old fellow behind the counter about it but he didnt know much other then "that was a long time ago"
I took a picture of the picture and sent it to a few friends then followed an old lead on another 56-58 bus i knew of in the area to see if maybe it was this particular bus. The guy never got back to me and it kinda fizzeled out.
A few weeks go by and a friend Richie whom i sent a picture to says he stumbled upon a picture a fellow Samba user posted on a different site of this bus!
Thats just insane!

^^^ There is something familiar about that bus and the photo. I am almost positive I have seen that bus before, either in a different photo or in person.

Kyle,

Very cool! As an avid fly fisherman from Eastern WA this would be the Holy Grail. I'd love to see more photos.
