so I put in a bug transmission out of a 70 model. Now to locate 1st gear, the shifter is straight up middle. I still can find 2nd by pushing all left and down, 3rd by pushing to far right and up and 4th far right and down. Is there something wrong? it bugging me because it makes it little bit harder to locate 1st gear. |

You may need to take the shifter out and bend the shift rod a little to the left or right but first make sure that you have the shift couple on correct and the bolt is in the correct hole and it is good shape |

Thanks. That makes some sense. I have replaced both the coupler and the bushing.. I did have my "hockey Stick" get lodged in first gear. I didn't understand what was happening, so in my struggle to try and get it to release, I could have definitely bent the rod a little. I didn't think I put too much pressure, but I might have. The shifter lined up just fine prior to the incident. I pulled transmission, replaced with a bug transmission( due to slipping out of reverse), then replaced shift coupler and bushing. So really unless this could be a transmission issue, I do believe the rod is bent as Citroen stated!
My only question is, why does 2nd gear feel to be in right location on the shifter and 1st is the only one that seems to be out of alignment on shifter? |

you did say that you had to push down and to the left which means you were using the reverse slot |

sorry no, misunderstanding on that part. When I said pushed all the way left and down, I meant like down into 2nd, not down like pushing down to get to reverse. Sorry I wasn't clear. |
