I read gt1953's suggestion, and I thought it seemed like a cheap way to fix the issue. I mean, why not just get a new clutch shaft with its new hook.

Then I remembered when I purchased a new clutch shaft awhile back. The hole for the pin was off to the point that the clutch shaft wouldn't turn, once I drove the pin in. So that new stock (but aftermarket) clutch shaft was useless. I ended up buying the clutch shaft upgrade from Classic Bug Parts--the kind with the bearing--and it fit precision-perfect. But it was more expensive (but worth it) than the first attempt going with a stock shaft.

So, maybe welding up the old clutch shaft is not a bad idea for some folks. At least you'll know it will fit back in without binding.

Tim

What you could do would be take that to a weld shop in your area and have them just build up the area where the hook goes.

I have given thought to having the factory one welded up if the aftermarket one I purchased doesn't fit; I do have a bench grinder here to clean up such weld. This is a horsey area, so not that tough to find someone who welds here. And I haven't ruled out that upgraded pedal hook style either. Maybe within a week I will tackle this.

Say won't Mrs Cusser be doing most of the driving on the vehicle?

Mrs. Cusser will use the VW to drag the horse arena, doubt that she will ever want to drive it into town though.

I plan to use the VW as my local vehicle up here, to run into town to stores (3 - 5 miles away) and to drive to softball field twice a week (15 miles away).
