1968 Deluxe resurrection

So, in my random chipping away at the needs of the crusty pig, I decided to clear the blocked heat risers in the intake manifold.

I cut a 2' section out of the broken parking brake cable & chucked it up in the drill & used it as a flexible drill bit/Roto-rooter.

After running it through from both sides, I dumped out the carbon.

Then to ensure that the heat risers were as clear as possible, I kinked the tip of the cable & ran it through again.

And then again a bit further down.

Then I ran this through several times until I no longer felt the cable snag.

I keep a few old cables around just for that singular purpose. Works great with a combo of some heat and some ATF soaking.

I spent some more time on the crusty pig & finished the front right brakes.

Then cleaned & packed the bearings.

Then moved on to the left rear.

I was not expecting the adjusters to be seized to the shoes.

But I got them back together.

Then I moved on to the right rear brake hose & only had to coax one flare nut to free up.

And then replaced the brake hose.

At this point I thought I was going to bleed the brakes, but then was disappointed to find that the one year only brake reservoir was MIA. Now the hunt is on for a replacement.

@ GTV, the repaint dissolves with acetone which does not affect the factory enamel paint. I just saturate a rag with acetone, hold it on a spot for a couple of minutes & then wipe it off.

@ curtp07, I've done the fronts but have yet to do the rears, I didn't hav the seals yet.

I did remove the cylinder heads, replace the pushrod tubes, & torque them back down (alternating from side to side), then set my sights on cleaning the tins so I didn't contaminate my blast media but so much.

Then gave the tins some blast cabinet time.

I can't find my note, but from memory the M157 was stamped on the shroud at the factory to specify that the emission control setup was installed (appropriate for the year). The front was also stamped with the engine size, codes for other engine options and the letters 'IO' for 'in ordnung', 'in order' or OK.

Thanks Gonzo & MacDonaldneal. Unfortunately, between patchy rust & NC red clay turned porcelain glaze, I was forced to sandblast it. I did however make a template so that I can recreate it.

But I made some more progress on the paint.

After leaving the saturated rag on the paint, it looks like this...

And then wipes off.

How long are you leaving the acetone on the paint before you wipe it off? I am going to try on my 68' this Saturday!
