Sometimes this is true not a general rule at all though based on my experience. If the engine has a little extra compression ratio and it runs hot perhaps it's a non-dog house with the steel oil cooler. They get pretty hot. The more throttle at high RPM the more heat the heads make. Sometimes if the grade is not too steep it's better in 3rd with more throttle. But on a really steep grade to even pull it you got to go to 2nd and back off on the throttle to keep the heat generated down.
