Gas Smell From Oil Bath

Hello all, new here. 1971 Ghia Coupe.

I am concerned that I have this problem: http://www.vw-resource.com/gas_oil.html

After a strong smell of gas inside of Oil Bath Filter when I open it up.

Dip stick doesn't smell like fuel, but oil bath contents do. Oil on dipstick isn't too runny.

Car runs great, a little finicky on hot starts, even when starting it with depressing peddle.

Not going to drive the car until I figure it out, better safe than sorry.

Not unusual to have a gas smell inside the oil bath. The carburetor has fuel in it all the time and is vented to atmospheric pressure, so you will get fumes in the air cleaner just from normal evaporation of gasoline from the carb float bowl.

Not sure if '71 had this, but another source of gas smell in the air cleaner would be the fuel tank venting system. Early cars just vented the tank to atmosphere but in later cars those fumes are routed to the air cleaner to be burned in the engine.

Yeah I'd say it's normal really. Do you have all the ventilation hoses attached?

Perhaps the previous owner had used gasoline to clean the oil bath air filter housing and filter element and failed to rinse it thoroughly before putting it all back together?

The oil bath does have air cleaner attached to it.

I have the typical "Gas Smell From Fuel Tank" I Have read so much about and am tending to, so I was just a little worried when I was cleaning the oil bath.
