A friend of mine has had this sitting under a cover for years, with the engine and seats stored inside a dry garage for as long as the bug has been outside. It's complete and relatively unmolested, He wasn't a "car guy'" it was just his car back in the day. He offered it to me for $400. My goal is to get the mechanicals sorted out, make it solid and preserve as much of the OG paint as possible. I'd like to eventually use it as fairweather daily driver, hopefully it's not rotten. I haven't seen the car myself in quite some time, these are pictures he sent me. I'm going by tomorrow to see if we can get the tires aired up and wheels turning so I can have it hauled home next weekend. I'll get some more pics then and turn this into a build thread.

It is a bit tough to tell, but it almost looks like vegetation might be growing inside the car.

May be some old pot seeds got established as it does look like something is growing inside

That front upper quarter looks rough. Hopefully the rest is in better shape.

Well, I went and looked at it Saturday, and it's actually a lot more solid than it looked in those photos the PO sent me. It does have a bit of vegetation inside, but more importantly it also has all it's original unmolested parts! Even factory popouts! The driver's quarter isn't nearly as bad as it looks, it seems to have some bondo work at some point but no rot through. The floor pans and heater channels will need some attention, but the car is cheap enough I won't feel bad about teaching myself how to weld on it. My dad and I also parted out a 66 years ago, so we've still got a bunch of parts squirreled away. All 4 tires took air, and all the wheels turn freely, which was a big relief. It will be coming home sometime this week. I can't wait to get started on it! Here's a bunch of photos I took:

pretty sweet project dude ! it's rough but looks to have not been f-d with. good luck!

BTW, in my opinion, Wolfsburg West makes the best pan halves and Klassicfab makes the best heater channels (or go with original used ones that were cut out of a car) little more pricy than cheaper options but worth it in the long run i think.

She's home!! Much more solid than I'd first thought! Also, the blue fender and apron are original red paint underneath the blue! My guess is that someone tried painting the car blue but changed their mind after the did the fender and apron. The orange decklid is a surprise, but that too has OG red paint underneath. This is great news, because it means the car hadn't been wrecked and repaired like I'd first thought!

Front floorboards are in much better shape than I'd thought! I think I can save them, just need the rear half panels. The passengers heater channel is pretty rough, but that's the worst spot on the whole car. Rocker section and bottom are pretty good. Drivers side is much better, it's patchable!

Really pleased with how solid this area is!

So I used some stuff called Rust Mort on the front floor pan sections and other areas that had some exposed surface rust, my dad swears by it. Has anyone used it? Should I put down a layer of POR-15 as well, or would that be redundant?

Rust Mort- yes; back in the mid 1980's I first used it on my Ghia pan and body rust control. Then applied Rust-O-Leum enamel paint over the treated metal using a brush on the hidden areas. I still have a bottle of it; I think the local body shop supply store carries it.

The technique I've used in the past few years on heavily rusted small engine parts such as the sled tins, is to clean off the worst of the rust scale using a wire bristle cone-shaped brush on an angle grinder. Wear long-sleeve sweatshirt and of course a face shield in case a bristle flies off. Spray on a rust converter, or the Rust Mort, which chemically neutralizes and stabilizes the rust. Spray on self-etching primer over the entire piece to "eat" into the metal. Spray on filler primer, wet sand with 220, apply more spray filler, wet-sand, then the final color coat which for my engine parts is semi-gloss black. For your floor I would skip the filler primer and the sanding. You could paint the rough treated metal with POR-15, since that paint fills pits nicely and the brush marks disappear. I'd also recommend the black semi-gloss color for a floor or underside of the pan. The POR-15 sticks best to rough surfaces, so that once the original rust is chemically stabilized, the POR-15 will seal the rest of the surface.

I did some rearranging in the garage, now there's room for her to live inside out of the elements! I feel a lot better now.

Is there a rattlecan paint that's a fairly close match for Ruby red? I need something I can use to touch up repaired areas and hopefully blend into the existing paint.

Try here, but make sure you read through to see if that has changed, it seems like Krylon changed a few of there colors since this was started.

And its funny how we take something that has sat outside for decades and will not allow to get wet anymore. I am guilty as well as most people on here. I have two non-op VWs in my garage and my daily driver sits out in the rain and snow.

I had pretty good luck with Rustoleum Regal Red. (If you can find it, try the "Rustoleum Professional" line.)

Awesome thread, thanks Pondora's Box and Cricketseed!

Is that white on your rims a match to what they came with originally? I know the centers were originally black.

Also it looks like the paper tubes for the windshield venrs in the trunk have red overspray on them. After looking at pictures of other cars it looks like they have body colored overspray too, was this how it was from the factory? After closer inspection it seems the car has been painted at least once in it's life, but the trunk looks original. There are presumably original wax crayon marks in the trunk between the tank and the dash area.

YES, that is how it was originally. i'm going to try to mimic that when i replace those tubes on my 67. they are the defrost hoses and connect to the front of the heater channels. your car may have had its exterior resprayed once a while back, that is the case with my 67.

If you want to get that blue and orange off, try acetone on a rag for a few minutes than scrub it off with the rag.
