Dude that's cool as crap! Congrats! The bus itself is the real trophy, but that's a sweet unexpected bit of icing on the cake Cool

Nice job man!

With all this rain, I'm finally having to bite the bullet and begin replacing door and window seals on the bus.
Anyone have any suggestions or advice on a quality rear hatch seal? The door seal currently is allowing water to puddle up in the left corner by the linen cabinet and me no likey.
Seems pretty straight forward, looking to have one about mid next week, it's been nothing but rain lately!

Not that it helps the seal but if you're keeping the bus outside (like I do my Beetle) - a nice car cover made ALL the difference for me.

After screwing around with junk Pep Boys covers .... Got a heavy duty cover from JBugs...doesn't BD have a good bus cover?

Anyway good luck w the seal!

I like the bus depot cover. If you live in a real windy area, it will buff your paint, but then any of them would......

Rear hatch seal has been ordered, back ordered one week through Bus Depot, hoping it's as pretty as I'm anticipating.
I did receive my new non-adjustable tie rod assembly. Now I've been out with a pulled back for a week, but dammit, sitting around is driving me nuts! So hopefully I can worm under the bus and swap it out. Inner tie rod end is shot (only crappy one left) and I'm really hoping it eliminates my slightly sloppy steering on the highway.
Really wanting to button it up against cross winds and big rigs. After this, all I have left is ball joints and steering box. One day...

FYI,
NEVER DRIVE WITHOUT A PROPER ALIGNMENT AFTER CHANGING STEERING CONPONENTS.
I nearly died, and I'm pretty sure I shortened my life with the stress. Once I'm up to par, I'm going to bring in my toe-in adjustments. Whoa. Never doing that again.

Lil-jinx, thank you for the link. Very simple and self-explanatory.
Aside from risking my life being a dumbass, I doubled down and raised a hand by expediting my need for a couple new tires before long.

Done that before. I got to experience the "death wobble" in an old chevy pickup truck after changing tie rods. Shocked
Turns out alignment is kind of important.

With a free afternoon, no company at the house, today consisted of some maintenance.
With very odd, alarming performance trucking home last night, I decided to change the oil again, to Castrol 20w-50 since we have summer temps now, as well as installing the Bosch spark plugs I've had sitting around for a few weeks.
Cylinder 3 spark plug wasn't tight, though I admit that the last time I put plugs in, I didn't torque them to spec, today everything torqued down to 20ft lbs.
With the sun making it's dance for the day, I left the chore of retiming the engine for another day. Test running today after plug change and oil swap, something's still off a bit.
These dual Solex's sure are fun! Laughing
While crawling around in a clean garage, I cleaned and applied grease to all the fittings up front, the beam took about half a tube, shame on me.
Believed to have addressed my alignment issue, at least for the moment, I doubt the true accuracy of my attempts, but we'll see.
Rear hatch seal install and review coming up this coming week.

Keep a eye on the toe setting by rubbing your hand across the tire treads.if the toe is off you will feel a saw tooth pattern,it will feel rough going across the treads one way and smooth going the other.

I had that experience once when moving from the Bay Area to Palm Springs. I had a loaded U-Haul with a trailer carrying my SUV. Just as I got onto Hwy 101 and accelerated to 60, it felt like the rig was bouncing from side to side until I was able to slow it to 50.

Probably the dumbest thing I did was to continue the journey, keeping it just under 60 for the 10-hour long drive on a Friday, including rolling thru LA traffic. (I didn't want to have to unload this truck and pack everything in a new truck, assuming U-Haul even had one to give me.). Of course, on that long, boring @$$ stretch of I-5, I'd very slowly speed up and the bouncing would start again, which was better than coffee at waking me up.

I was never so glad to be done with a trip as that one. When I got to PS, I left the rig parked on the street, bared all and jumped in the pool!

Looking for clarification on the linkage here, shown on a '73 throttle arm, in my 74 Westy. What's all missing here, I know of only one other thread regarding this topic and didn't find much clarity with the images given.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

There is excessive slack within the throttle cable but no means of increasing the tautness, and I'm tired of dealing with it on the end of the pedal.
Suggestions?
On another note, I received my rear cargo hatch seal from Bus Depot. One week backordered, received today labeled as Parts International, though the seal looks nice (clean form and indentations of cornering), feels durable, it was purchased with the expectation of being genuine VW, as mentioned on the web listing. Calling tomorrow for insight, maybe it's labeled wrong, or I got the wrong part number, though the number matches online, and it's the only option available on their website. Updates to follow.

Jason, thanks for the knowledge.
I replaced the C-clip that fits within the notch on the throttle linkage pin (3/8Ē c-clip).
Kicker is that the return spring has been in the forward most position (when C-clip was missing) so with the spring in the correct position it doesnít have the correct tension to return the throttle linkage, so I am running the bus with the C-clip installed, eliminating slack within the linkage, while the spring is in itís non-correct, tension-allowing position.
Anyone have leads on springs? Laughing

On another note, I ended up installing the Pacific International rear hatch cargo seal. The new seal was pliable, one-piece, in which I separated at the seam up top, to install behind the rear hatch pivoting arms. The new seal is grayish in color, no where close to the black one that was original, though I think some of the whitish-gray will wash out as the shipping/storage powdery material wears off over time.
The fit is nice, and overall Iím satisfied with the seal. Not wowed, but it serves its purpose.
Again, not a VW seal as stated, every once in a while, I do have dishearten surprises from the Depot, but its what it is, Iím not sure what wouldíve taken place if I had called and raised questions, but for now, Iíll keep being lazy.
Did not use any weatherstripping adhesive. None.

All my grey seals snapped right in and fit WO splits- the black lighter foam ones never fit and now full of cracks- so Be happy- think you got the better one.

like that bus- good job.

did you get a spring? try Ace hardware.

For working on your birthday, the least a man can do is be grateful he can cruise in such style!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So far I'm loving the new, cleaner throttle response. Mountain Home show in 2 weeks!

WillamM,
I'm using the original spring, attached to the arm as shown in my questionable photo I posted prior to Jason's response. I'm weary on finding one with the correct tension, I don't want to excessively damage the carbs.

So as I noted in the Steering Coupler thread, I ordered the wrong part number (coupler) for my bay window, though not discovering the differences until removing the old one. So for now, the old one is back in place, and boy, is it shot!
Please be advised the smaller coupler shown next to original is indeed WRONG for our bay window bus applications:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Anyone have any leads on good, quality bus steering couplers?
In the event of having to reassemble the steering goods, I decided to figure out why my horn quit working for me. Verifying grounds, cleaning a couple connections, and indeed seeing the terminal on the spade of the bottom steering column, upon reinstallation of parts, the horn is now back in action!
Woo-hoo! Now I can honk at hot ladies and driving monkey idiots! But mainly hot broads now that Iím single, bus life gets lonely... Laughing
