Lindy, contact Ed Fall at Vintage Werks for the specific details. He is the premier rebuilder of these components and can supply you with specific details for indentification.

here is a rough run down, the emphasis being on rough.

split etc till 1953? flat top. towards the end of this style they changed from an 8mm fuel line to a 6mm fuel line, there were probably heaps of other changes.

till mid 1955 wave top with drain screw on the side:

a few months? only mid/late 55, wave top with the boss for the drain screw but not tapped/fitted with the screw.

sorry can't find a pic atm.

56 wave top with no screw: edit, this may not be an actual production model.

circa 57, ribbed top with short outlet:

Nice breakdown.

Some more info:
53s are 6mm because they have the carburetor with the accelerator pump.

I've never heard that, I think that might just be a mismatched top and bottom.
For example, the bottom wore out so it was replaced while the original top was retained.

Nice write up, I've been looking up and down thesamba and can't find a thread on how to rebuild a 36hp fuel pump. Can anyone here direct me to the proper thread? Thank you.

If I currently have stock 6mm fuel pump and want to run a Mann fuel filter that is 8mm how can I make the input line into the pump 8mm so I can use the filter?

Perhaps a brass adapter bushing similar to the ones VW offered for retrofitting 6mm components on cars with 8mm fuel systems....same concept but in reverse.
