I needed to 'adapt' our bike rack to take the tandem. The two main problems are that the tubing is too big to fit in the standard clamping mechanism, and the bike would stick out too far with the wheels on Embarassed!
Once I had it strapped in place, I had to troubleshoot and clean up a few contacts on the light board, to make sure I can be seen!

What a great trip you've got planned Phil. Let's see lots of pictures on the Ferry and of around your destination. Us Americans love to see pictures of VW's in Europe.

Cool!!
That weekend is held very close to me! maybe i'll join in.
You could also visit me in Doesburg wich is a very nice old town with camper spots at the dockside or my driveway Wink
It's more or less on the way back to the coast.
I can name you some very nice camping spots at the coast!

Hey, that would be great if you came along! You'll recognise our bus Very Happy !
We should arrive at Beekbergen during the day on Saturday. We've no very fixed plan until we have time to look at a map once we get away (our usual level of organisation Rolling Eyes !)

Tips for good camping on the coast would be great, we will probably visit Groeningen and then head West along the coast...

I have spent my preparation day 'fiddling while Rome burns' (as Shona would definitely say Wink )
The bus had got covered in tree sap and pollen while I was fixing the CV joints, so I gave it a quick wash.
I packed in a 'few' tools and spares and, much like the 'essential tools and spares' threads I soon realised I would need another vehicle to carry everything Shocked !
It's difficult. Now that I have fixed a few things on the bus, I feel that I should have all the tools I know how to use, but of course, travelling light is essential in a smallish vehicle, especially when I have a tandem, a wife, a cat and food and drink to fit in too!
So, back to reality. I decided to get rid of everything that wasn't pretty much essential. Or at least, keep the things I would be annoyed not to be able to fix if we have a problem en route.

From memory I have:
2x fire extinguishers between the seats
Spares:
Fuel pump
Complete Distributor setup, with HT leads
Coil
Jack, chocks
Jump leads
Warning triangle, fluoro vest (required by law in most of Europe)

Basic electrical repair kit
Bulbs, fuses

My day to day tool roll, so all the basic tools, feeler gauges etc

Muir 'idiot' book. I'm not planning major work, and Muir is good for troubleshooting common problems, and an entertaining night-time read!
We also have mobile phones and European breakdown cover, so fingers crossed!

The final bits of packing always take much longer than you think!
I had cooled the fridge on 240v overnight, and now it's packed with goodies!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Fire extinguishers, 1x foam and 1x dry powder, stowed within easy reach...

Portable toilet tucked out of the way

Our personal packing has been kept pretty light, the bags and bedding stow in the back

The tandem wheels take up a ridiculous amount of space! You can see the emergency engine oil and small fuel canisters, next to a third fire extinguisher. (That, and the fire blanket are for camping related fire Shocked)

Unless I'm missing something, you really need to secure those fire extinguishers & any other loose, heavy items in the passenger compartment. In an accident, those items can kill you.

Phil,

Are you currently running with one of the distributors that you did a refresh on?

Just curious as I haven't installed the one I got from you. My bus has been running so well that I've just kept it with my spare parts.

Have a great trip!

I'm as disorganised as you Tim. The distributor in the bus has been there 17 years at least! The spare is refurbished. I need to get around to swapping them and refreshing the old one!

We're now sitting in the queue for the ferry. We stopped on the way for a bite to eat, and then got stuck in roadworks and arrived 15 min before the check-in closed! All good though, and I'll post a few pics.
Note the old fashioned red telephone box in the rear view mirror Smile !

All aboard!

There was a bit of a delay boarding, due to a mix up about the height of the bus. They tried to squeeze us onto a low height space, but as you see, we've ended up next to some much higher vehicles! At least we've got plenty of space around us, so no one is squeezing past!
The cat has to stay in the vehicle for the crossing, so we've left her with plenty of food, water and litter. The cars around us had dogs on board, and they can go to the 'dog hotel' for the night
I wonder what the rooms are like!?

Yikes! I would not want to be near those big rigs in rough seas. I do note the big tether anchors , though.

Great pics Phil! How many hours is the journey on the ferry? Out of curiosity, what's the cost of that trip on the ferry?

What a great adventure! Jealous.

We're too stingy to pay for internet access, so we've stopped at a McDonalds for coffee (the shame Embarassed !)
The ferry crossing takes about 17 hours. Time enough for a view from the side as we leave Britain, a bite to eat in the restaurant, a few chapters of my book before falling asleep to the sound of excited French teenagers screaming outside our room!
Time for the earplugs!
Unloading doesn't take too long, but we had to wait for the decks to be raised and lowered so that we could come off with the lorries! In the meantime, we got chatting to a Dutch driver who had been delivering flowers and was impatient to get home! Of course, he had happy memories of camping in a VW bus the same colour with his dad!
The queue for passports and customs sometimes takes longer, but was pretty quick today!
Still needed a coffee when we got off though, so we stopped at a cheese shop L'amuse...

Shona tells me it's about £530 for the return crossing, which includes two nights accommodation, the bus and the cat!
Dear, but worth it!

Sadly the lack of internet means I don't have the address of the campsite Embarassed !
Luckily, Samba member 1970fun lives nearby, and he has texted it to me! See you tomorrow Harry!

We've arrived at the campground, with a nice selection of all types of VW bus. A couple of splitties, a large handful of Bays and lots of newer buses. Everyone is very friendly indeed!. I'll try and upload some pics, although the WiFi is very slow (so I might have to edit them in later). The Kombi is attracting a lot of attention, mainly for the 'roo bars and the tandem, and of course the cat. There are loads of (well behaved!) dogs here but she doesn't seem bothered.
We've just had a ride to the local village and are relaxing in the sun with a beer. We'll probably cook in the bus tonight.

I've got a bit of catching up to do here!
We had a freezing cold night in the bus, where I wished I had brought the woollen blanket! The main problem is that my feet stick out of the end of the bed. The cat did her best to keep me warm!
One thing I did buy before this trip was a matching pair of square, non stick pans, which fit very nicely on the stove top. The gas is burning with a yellow flame at full blast, and I wonder if the jets need cleaning or maybe the bottle is a bit low?

A couple more photos from the campsite. There was a steady stream again today of folk asking and chatting about the bus. All very friendly!

Samba member 1970fun had travelled to meet us. His bus is a gorgeous, beautifully restored and tastefully modified '70, which is quite frankly immaculate! The whole bus is wonderful, with lots of NOS goodies, but the engine bay is particularly nice, with a subtly and cleverly modified single carb 1776.
We had a great chat and lunch in the sun and he had kindly brought us some tasty local gifts which we will enjoy later.
He was happy for me to post a few pictures of his bus and it was a pleasure to meet him. Oh, and Harry, thanks for all the camping tips, you'll see how we get on!
