I can't bring mine to work (65-70mph with half of the commute 2 lanes bumper to bumper) but this is where I work out! A bus sure does stand out.

Drove my 58 PGSG to work after finishing up all the electrical on it. First time I ever drove a 36hp crash box tranny on the freeway (in southern California too!). I think my 53mph was slower than 53mph in other states.

It's only a 15 minute trip in a modern car and it was a 20 minute trip in the bus.

The wrong ones, lol. They're stock rims 15" but the tires are like 205/75 or something... Not sure I can look when I get home tonight if you're interested.

they looked small, but 205/75s should be close to stock diameter, speedometer reading should be accurate enough.

Yeah maybe they're not 205, like I said I'm not sure. But I was using my iPhone GPS speedometer to check the actual speed.

the reason i asked: in a 36 horse bus with stock transmission, you need all the help you can get to run 55mph at a reasonable rpm. a 10% smaller diameter makes a HUGE difference in RPM at the same speed.

300rpm or 5mph matters when you approach top speed Smile On a later bus this is not such an issue

I was cruising on the flat at 53 without flooring it. I could get up to 60mph on a slight downhill with some distance. The roads are super smooth by me, so i'm sure that helps a bit. I do think they're slightly smaller diameter than stock, but I can't remember the actual size, they came on the bus that way. I'm saving my money to get some stock bias plys but these tires work right now so the bias plys are a bit of a "nice to have" at the moment Smile

Ok I checked them they're 195/65r15 which makes them a 25" tire. I think the stock size is 27" so I'm short by 2 inches, could be why my top speed is so low.

that is what i thought, chances are these tires will last you till the end of time as far as wear is concerned.... i have had the same size on a big nut westy, big nut makes a big difference in top speed and rpm.

with 6.40/15s you will be much faster at the same RPM.

My Bus had been out of commission for a while before I started my current job February last year. I actually got laid off from my previous job right in the middle of building the engine for it. Anyway, about a month into this one I drove it to work quite a bit but then slacked off for the winter. My coworkers, many of them car guys, kept asking when I was going to drive it again, so I did. Cool

Here is my bus in 2014 with a small load of lumber for shoring up the stairs while the foundation is rebuilt. That was just the beginning.

My first bus/panel was a 1960, 36 hp, 6 volt. I found that 53 was the best cruising speed. That was running 700 x 15 retread tires, bias ply. That was in 1968. I "hopped" it up with and Empi Screamer Kit, a snappy little chrome air cleaner and an Empi extractor exhaust.

The drive from Phoenix to San Diego was an 8 hour plus adventure.

The grade form Ocotillo to Jacumba was 3rd gear, 36 MPH. Plenty of time to look at the scenery. Good times.
