Friday is when we get it. But there is a lot of dispersed BLM camping all along Dubinky Well Road (same road you drive on for 1000 feet to get to Lone Mesa Campground). Just drive along there and pull off on a side road There will probably be other vans trickling in Thursday too. _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

I was going to leave Salt Lake and drive down on Weds, but because of snow over Soldiers Summit on US 6 I'm now looking at Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. If I get there Thrusday, I'll probably camp at Horsthief Campground if there are any spots available. |

Winter has returned to the Colorado high country. For those of you heading west through Colorado you might want to check the cdot website to ensure I70 is still open. Vail pass was closed this morning.

Had a little issue on the way to Victor CO today. CV went bad climbing to Victor Pass. Replaced it on a pull out since I did not think we'd make it to town before it blew. New CV works fine.

Can I ask a quick question on the methods you or anyone else use to press the axle off or on the CV Joint while out on the road? I use a vice and hammer at home but would like to be prepared for such an event.
Have fun out there guys!

Can I ask a noob question which wasn't clear from the website? Is this gathering open to 1WD Westys too? Looked like there was some grumbling over on Syncro de Mayo and was just curious if as a 1WD owner I can plan to attend at a future event! _________________ '87 Westy 1.8T Conversion, Orignal Owner, European Delivery @ Westfalia factory in Weidenbrueck.

I've been to all six Syncro Solstices in my 1wd and nobody's grumbled at me yet. (Not about my Vanagon, anyway. ) It's open to everybody. In the picture below, you'll notice if you look closely that there are quite a few non-Syncros.

I70 is open. We just went thru the Eisenhower tinnel. They did not have chains in effect and the roads were not bad. Stopped now in Vail for gas. They got 18 so far bit 70 is clear.
We were going to cross over the divide on 50 but decided that 70 might be better.
We will be spending the night in Grand Junction then Moab Friday. _________________ Dave O

Been twice and brought my 1wd (since it is a camper) instead of my Syncro both times. No hate perceived. Buddy's bay window got the most positive attention of the vans we were around.
Not going to make it this year unfortunately.

Hey I see my Vanagon! Great time indeed and great to finally meet you, Dave.
Major, major thanks to Johnny, Hans, and everybody else who makes this event the most fun weekend of the year.
Sadly, my camp stove did not have the most fun weekend. I could have sworn it was out of the way when I backed out of my spot.
In true Vanagon fashion, the stove was parted out and the clasp from the front is now on a cabinet in Samba user Erste's sweet '82 TDI. The circle of life continues. _________________ Joe T.

Pretty sure this was one of the best we've had! I seem to take less photos each year, but here's a few...

Mrs. Howesight and I had an amazingly good time at Syncro Solstice, our first Syncro/Westfalia get-together with our American on-line friends and a few other intrepid Canadian friends. It was great to put faces to names and kibbitz with everyone.
Mrs. Howesight will be posting a bunch of pics soon. We had only one minor incident on the entire trip (2,400 miles round trip) that caused a crack and small leak in my oil pan, but we made it home late last night without any mechanical or other incidents.
Thanks to Johnny Maw and his excellent crew, including team leader Hans for the excellent logistics of the entire event, including the incredible edibles, and all the obvious hard work that went into the event.
To Dave O and his mother Billie, who are still in the Moab area, it was great meeting with you and we hope you enjoy the extended stay! _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |
