My alternator belt was loose and my van was screaming when I turned it on so I went to tighten it and realized that the bolt behind the alternator with the adjusting gear to lift it and tighten the belt was stripped so I took it out and ordered a new one. I got the new one exact same size as the old one and it won't go in the bolt is too short and I can't fit the nut on to it I've been trying to push and pull to show more of the bolt but nothin is working has anyone else had this issue? And if so what did you do to fix it!!!

That bolt threads into the body of the alternator, no nut involved.

Are you sure? Because when I took it off it had a nut at the end and the bolt slides in pretty wel without screwing it in. If it does need to be threaded in then the hole it goes in is completely messed up. Would I need a new alternator?

Somebody replaced it with a bolt that was too small and put a nut on it. Maybe they stripped the alternator out so the correct size bolt won't work.

I just looked in where it treads with a flash light and td completely f'd up I have the right size thread that's suppose to go in but it won't grip onto anything it's completely stripped on the inside. Any clues on how I need to fix that?

You could try to re-thread it with the appropriate sized tap.

NOTE: I don't know if it is M6. Link is just for product reference.

If the tap just spins in there, you might have to drill it out, drill the bracket out, then tap one size up and buy a larger bolt. Not a huge deal.

At least it's not an exhaust stud or something on the motor Smile

sure thing, how about getting a longer bolt with a nut, or use the nut and bolt that was there when you started.

Is that a D.I.Y. adjuster welded to the bracket? OEM maybe?
