One driving light, one fog. Because I didn't want to choose. Actually found lights that match(for cheap!) from two different eBay sellers:) |

Hi guys, and a Happy New Year!
I have some fog lights photos taken in a local vw show last year (car park).
The question is do I have to cover reg plates since cars are not mines?
I had no chance to ask permisson every time...
Thanks
ps.; Have some old ('70s) car mags with fog light ads, so showing off those photos too could help you to identify yours if you don't mind. |

No, you do not have to cover the plates, they are in a public display. _________________ How to Post Photos

Nothing really special but I like the look, and these suckers are bright. I sometimes keep them on as driving lights if I'm in heavy traffic and want to make sure I'm seen.

Hi All,
In my sixty-three years of driving and riding European vehicles and motorcycles, in dark and stormy weather, I have the following observations:
- Effective fog lights should be mounted on the vehicle as low as possible to the road and on the outside corner of the bumper. Road hazards will damage many fog lights in this location, so I elected to mount two Hella fog lights above the bumper and inboard of the low mounted parking/turn signal lights, per VW recommendations. Two fog lights help illuminate the shoulder and center line of the road. A single fog light is mounted on the right front of a left hand drive "LHD" vehicle to illuminate the road shoulder.
- Vehicle lighting standards in Europe were far superior to politically influenced lighting laws in the USA. Fog lights were only used with low beam head lights or parking lights. Head lights were not allowed to be used in most European cities in the 1970's. It made sense not to use fog lights with high beam headlights, as the close in glare of the fog lights reduced one's distant vision down the road. White fog lights work better with white low beam headlights while yellow fog lights work well with yellow low beam headlights, i.e. France.
- Clear lens driving lights are mounted higher and in the line of sight of the driver. A single driving light would be mounted on the driver side of the vehicle. We never had a need for a driving light on the "Westy" as it would not go fast enough to overdrive the Hella H4 high beam headlights. Most pictures in this excellent post show VW's with fog light right and driving light left on LHD VW's.
- A Berlin VW dealer installed VW Bosch 7-in Chrome fog lights, with clear lenses, on our 1972, "Westfalia" KOMBI. The light switches were set up per German Law, the fog lights extinguished when high beams were selected and came on with the low beam selection. The fog lights also illuminated if the parking lights were on. Fog lights were not used in good weather, only in fog, rain, snow or contaminated roads, when windshield wipers were in use. Chrome has held up well for 47 years in a Germany/Michigan climate. You get what you pay for.
Happy New Year All

My parent's 1965 bug in 1969. That's my Dad sitting on the hood.
He wasn't 100% sure, but he thinks the fog lights came from JC Whitney.
