I have a 73 standard beetle, I would like to install a new wring harness, is there one available that would incorporate the use of an alternator instead of the stock generator? |

If you have an alternator with an internal regulator, how about this one?

The above wiring harness should be the ticket for your car.
Alternatively, the conversion from generator to alternator is rather simple and compared to re-wring the whole car is a "piece of cake". The diagram from Speedy Jim's site below shows the conversion:
It involves splicing two wires together to extend the blue #61 wire all the way to the alternator. You will need to clip the end of this wire off and replace the ring with a quick disconnect connector.
The hardest part is joining the three heavy gauge (8AWG) red wires together under the rear seat. If you can scrape up a stock alternator wiring junction (from a recycle yard?) it almost becomes a plug-n-play upgrade by just inserting the female terminals into the junction. Even the above wiring harness may not contain this junction.
If you cannot find one, you may need another type of junction that can support bringing three 8AWG wires together (car audio power distribution block?). Soldering them and then wrapping them in multiple layers of heat shrink tubing is probably a last resort. _________________ AshMan40

Stock or not (which I don't know) My bug has a generator and I was thinking of updating wiring harness to later style fuses. Speedy Jim's diagram looks like it's a slam dunk and thank you for that!
