I am new to the world of VWs and need some direction. Today is the first time I have driven at night and noticed the green bottom right light on the offender was flickering when coasting in neutral with no gas pressed. As soon as I press the gas it quits. Eventually shortly after it quit doing that. Then I notice a light glow on the bottom left light red which is the gen. I pulled over to physically inspect the engine compartment to no avail. I finished driving to the house and it went from a faint glow to where cannot barely see to a brighter glow but not yet full brightness as if the key was just turned over to accessories. None of these lights glow or flicker if the headlights are off. At no point are the lights as brightly lit as when the key is just turned to on position. Should I worry ? What to check first ? Any direction is appreciated. Shouldn't the light be dim regardless if headlights are off or on? |

clean the ground to your speedo assembly....most times it is poor ground causing the gen light to glow dimly when parking lights are on.
the oil pressure light on/flickering at idle..is usually 1 of 2 things..a bad oil pressure switch or low engine oil pressure |

The lights were only doing this while the headlights are turned on. If I were to turn them off they do not come on in any way shape form or fashion if it were ground or an actual mechanical issue wouldn't te warning lights still do re same regardless if headlights are turned on or not ? |

Instrument grounding does not effect red light because it is between the +15 (from the key ignition switch) and the "d+" terminal of the generator.
So, If the light glows, i.e. there is some voltage at its terminals, you have only two options:
1 - generator voltage is lower than voltage at the ignition switch
2 - generator voltage is greater than voltage at the ignition switch.
Case 1. is when you have charging issues (generator + regulator); if you turn on headlight and they are bright with engine speed perhaps your charging system is OK; measure voltage on battery, if you get 7V at speed, with headlights off, charging should be OK.
Case 2. This is case of bad wiring. Generator puts out a lot of voltage that reaches directly the red light via a dedicated wire from regulator. BUT a lot of voltage is wasted into remaining wiring (where the other terminal of red light is connected), the issue is enhanced when headlights are on, so you notice red light glowing in the dark. In this case red light is working with an opposite polarity.
Try and measure. |
