Last year a VW friend of mine passed away. He owned a 68 Beetle and this 70 Ghia. Last week his wife called me and said she was ready to sell the car, and I had first dibs. We struck a deal and I brought this home today. On the way home, I had 3 people either give a thumbs up or yell "Nice car!" Never got that in my Beetle.
He was the 2nd owner, he bought it back in 2002 with 44,000 miles on it.
Now it has 60,000 miles. In 2007 he had $8500 worth of interior, body, and paint work done on it by a professional body shop. I did find a few small rust holes in the rear of the floor pans, but other than that this car is clean.

Welcome to the Ghia forum. Very nice car, even the rear engine seal looks new. Take lots of pictures. Best of luck with her. _________________ ----------------------

Well for one, everything is much tighter. The doors click closed so easily, the suspension and steering is tight. I've never owned a car with this low mileage.
It also sits a lot lower compared to a Beetle. _________________ -Andy-

I'm a sucker for historical stuff, and I think it's great that he and the original owner kept all this documentation with the car. Was purchased on December 21st 1970 from Van Slyke VW in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Maintenance record book shows dealer stamps all the way until the 18,000 mile service on Jan 22nd 1974, at 19,487 miles.
He also had the original Tennessee 1970 plate with the car, as well as the last plate it was registered in TN with, from 1996. I think it then sat from 96 until he bought it in 2002.
The Radio policy card is stapled in the back of the owners manual, but I don't think the radio that's in the car right now is the original one. It doesn't work anyway. I'll have to look up the model and serial number and see if it matches.

I would turn the battery 90 deg.s so it's not being cooked being so close to the motor. My 70 is mounted as described above and has lasted 8 years. Just use a top clamp type battery hold down. Really clean Ghia. Just repair the pan holes with Por 15 or what ever rust stop you prefer by putting a thick coat of rust stop and lay some fiber glass cloth in the wet paint and follow with a few more coats when dry. Clean and coat the pan bottoms with the rust stop to extend the pan life. Enjoy |

I'm really enjoying this car. Waiting on new fuel lines to come in the mail, I also need to check the valves and see where they're at. Should probably change the oil too, as I'm not sure when it was done last.

beautiful Ghia (and the Bug too). My Wife gets good comments on her '72, even with the crappy paint. _________________ '72 Karmann Ghia Coupe (the Boss's) |

So I just discovered that being a '70 single port, my engine does not have a doghouse cooler.
Do you think it would be worth it to convert to a doghouse shroud and all associated parts? _________________ -Andy-

Volkswagen thought it a worthwhile upgrade...make your choice accordingly |
On the other hand, Volkswagen also thought that the Scirocco was a worthwhile replacement for the Karmann Ghia. |

Looks good though you are missing the intake air preheat hose and stove pipe. Replace them or seal the hole in the tin. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S
