Hi everyone,
I just bought a 1985 Westy, and she is a beauty. The "buzzer" is thankfully burned out it seems. I hate them. LOL.
I was wondering if it is possible to put the newer chime or "cucaracha" chime on her? Looks like a relay with a speaker, but before I go all hard core with modifications, LOL, just wanted to know if its possible, and if so, if there is a how to guide!
Thanks! |

How-to Guide:
1) Buy relay #321919433B.
2) Insert relay into proper relay panel location (this will vary by vehicle, so check your relay diagram).
I.E. It's plug-n-play. Simply swap the buzzer for the chime, or vice versa.

"cucaracha" chime |
Whom ever came up with "cucaracha" for the description I'd like to slap. The chime sings "Volks-wa-gen, Volks-wa-gen, Volks-wa-gen".

I have still to understand what this annoying chime is for. For like, "hey, dummy, you left your keys in the ignition and the door is open!!" ?? There's not one for the headlight relay but one for that, doesn't make sense to me.
I always remove them, and if I cannot and have to leave the door open, I push in the door switch temporarily cocked in such manner that it stays closed in the pilar.
If you're not in a rush, I might have some in a box, but I recently moved and not everything is stored correctly.

PM if you cannot find one [/quote]
I will PM you shortly. I am new to The Samba, so I cannot send a PM just yet. LOL. See you in a few hours! Hahaha!
So it is literally plug and play. I am impressed. After having a Toyota Prius where absolutely nothing is plug and play, it is refreshing.
I know some people are annoyed by the chime, and I totally understand. But for some reason, I rather enjoy the sound. It is also good to know it is easily removable hahaha! |

3-tone #188 chime is 1HM919433A from Jetta MK3.
Rewired grey/black from “key in slot” power into terminal 58 (narrow spade) for a fast tri-tone
Added a wire tapping into light switch terminal 58 (grey wire) powering terminal 85 (wide spade) for a slow tri-tone.
Note that terminal 86, 2 grey wires, go to door switches that ground upon opening. If it doesn't work then likely they are not contacting.
Testbench the chime:
Put negative to terminal 86 then:
Positive to terminal 58, you should get a fast tone.
Positive to terminal 85, you should get a slow tone.
Terminal 86 is only needed for a “power on” condition, like the seat belt warning. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |

I recommend putting a muzzle of electrical tape over the speaker. Really quiets it and makes it less annoying.
