Been lusting after this car for about 10 years and its finally mine. Built be a very good friend almost 40 years ago. He started with the concept and build in the mid 70s and, after completion, has driven the hell out of it (about 100,000 miles). As far as we know (and he would know) this is the first VW woodie ever built. I finished my own in 2011, so mine is one of the last.
Very long story, but he wanted the car to go to a good home. I have a couple things that I need to do to it (engine is VERY tired) and some minor odds and ends, but otherwise preserving and driving it. Seems that the wife is claiming this as hers....
And for a perspective - this is the one I finished in 2011.

He had given it a cosmetic freshening about 7 years ago. The engine is a Type 3 pancake. That was one of the big differences between his and the one I built. The engine is really tired though and with the "freeway flyer" tranny and the really tall rear tires, it struggles on hills. BUT I just happen to have a type 3 2332 that, once I sort it out, will fit very nicely.
Yeah - John built a matching teardrop trailer for this and drove the living shit out of it. This is a guy that has owned over 100 classic cars, including several 40's vintage Chrysler Town and Countrys. One of his Chryslers was shown at Pebble Beach and had later sold for HUGE money. And if that wasn't enough, he saw a concept drawing that Chrysler had done for a late 40's Town and Country roadster. The car was never built......except by John. Last pic I saw of that car was from Southbys or Barrett Jackson where it sold for around $125K several years ago.... Amazing guy and a really good friend. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

The rear fenders interest me! Definitely not stock VW fenders.
Any ideas? |

John used 39 Chevy rear fenders. I used heavily modified Morris Traveler fiberglass fenders on the on I built https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=445558&highlight=vw+woodie
Both of these cars are constructed in completely different manners, but with some similarities. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.
