The Bentley shows two different torques for the bolts that mount the flex plate to the crankshaft. Early and late. Is there actually a difference in any of the parts used over the years or did VW just up the torque because they were having problems with the lower torque spec.

80-85 - - 66ft*lbs
86-91 - - 81ft*lbs

Thanks

Hey guys, just curious about the flexplate...when I crank the flexplate to crank bolts, I can't turn the engine over to install the flexplate to torque converter bolts. 80ft lbs seems to freeze up the rotating assembly. After removing the flexplate, it turns by hand. What am I doing wrong?

Check the thrust washer and shims very carefully. The thrust washer can drop slightly out of place, chew up all your free play and result in what you describe. Also make sure the seal is recessed.

If this fails you can burn up the shims and thrust washer. It sucks.
