I have a 1962 Standard "cable brake" model beetle.
It has the "M" code optional ragtop sunroof.
I haven't started restoring this car yet, but was sitting at my desk at work daydreaming about this.
What color or finish should the Sunroof handle be ?
Grey, unfinished pot-metal, black, chrome, etc... ?
remember, it is a "standard" model and all the trim is "grey" from the factory.
Unfortunately, the handle was missing when I got it, so I can't look at it for reference.
Anyone have literature or pictures of another ragtop standard for reference ?

They still made cable brakes in 1962? That had to be about the time they phased out those things.

As for the handle, that's a darn good question. I've never heard of or seen a Golde handle in anything other than chrome, and since this was an option my guess would be that it would be chrome. However... since Standard models almost never made it to the US my knowledge base is centered around deluxes.

Does your 62 have aluminum side trim? If it does, then the handle should be chrome. I've seen a 67 standard with a ragtop (VolksWorld Dec 1995)and it's handle is chrome

The car is very close to the last car built with cable brakes.
1962 was the last year.
It has no trim.
All outside hardware ( bumpers, door handles, headlight rings, etc...) are either grey or black.
The later standards (1964-) were strange in that they adopted some "deluxe" type features, such as the three spoke standard steering wheel was ivory in color.
And the outside trim that used to be grey became a "dull silver metallic paint".
So I wonder if the earlier sunroof handle may have been something other than chrome????????????

Do you have any pictures of your car? I would like to see it. It sounds awsome.

Cool, another Standard! My 1200A doesn't live with me, but next time I'm visiting it I'll look in the owners manual for some clues. Mine does have chrome trim, being a "late model" but I know that they didn't update many of the photos in the manual.

I emailed a friend in Germany with an original paint (L225 gray) 59 with a sunroof. And he said his handle was chrome. I have pics of his car on the jupitergrey site as a 59 type 112, but not of the handle unfortunately.

Oh right on! You actually have a "standard" - My dad talked about seeing those in Germany but never one here in the states. He and I discussed them many times. I doubt he has an answer to yoru question, but I HAD to comment. As Shane Red said, post up some pics of that baby!

Just checked out your gallery. Nice pic of you as a baby in front of your car. Smile

Yeah, that's the 1300 in the photo. Thanks.

I finally went up to my parents house and got the owners manual for the 1200A. The photo shows a chrome handle.

Interesting, thanks.
I'm surprised they showed the standard model in the picture.
