A new owner of a '69 single cab rolled into our club meet, and we are all puzzled by these four holes surrounding the engine hatch.
They are roughly centered in the reinforcement channels that run the length of the bed. In fact, it appears there are corresponding holes behind the seats at the other end of the channels. Both ends of each channel appear to have been originally closed off with a plastic plug.
They don't line up with the rubber bumpers on the tailgate. They aren't drain holes; too high up in the channel cross section to drain.
By the way, another member noted the purpose of the larger holes above these: to let the tail/brake lights show through should the tailgate be down while driving.
My best guess is that VW sprayed a rust inhibitor of some kind in the holes to protect the channels, and sealed them with the plugs afterwards.
Anyone know for sure?

Thanks for the correction. I used to be a nice guy, then I ruined it by exposing myself to the public. |
