They add yet another surface to be sealed, anytime that I've seen this style of pushrod tubes used, they leak just as much, if not more, than the original style. But it's possible that the only ones that I've seen are the cheap Chinese versions. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I haven't used the Jaycee ones myself, but they are regarded as the BEST multipiece pushrod tubes in the performance T1 market.
I have used the SCAT ones and have had them not leak, but they took some fiddling with to get sealed up. If I were looking to buy a set, I would go with the Jaycee, but I also prefer standard tubes if building an engine up and the head aren't on yet.
If you are a real stickler about leaks or don't have the patience to work with the multipiece tubes to get them to seal up, it might be less frustrating in the long run to just pull the motor and RnR the heads for standard tubes. That could be done in a weekend pretty easily. Easier said than done though admittedly. Just thinking out loud. _________________ Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 2006

Several years ago I purchased a set. I believe if I remember right, JayCee makes them and CB sells them. I could be wrong
I can't remember why exactly but I think it was because I had a failure on a stock rocker and it damaged the push rod tube
Anyway, it's a real bitch to install them. You have to compress the spring and get the tube up into position, then release. I think I used safety wire to hold it compressed until in position.
They might work for a quick repair but I think it's best in the long run to remove the head and do the job right. They cost around $100 for a set. I think I still have a few in my drawer somewhere. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I had a stick or something wipe out the OEM tubes on one side of my WBXer so I installed spring loaded tubes. Had to go back a couple of times and twist the tubes around a bit to get them to seal perfectly, but after that they never showed any seepage again. |

slip joint tubes MUST be installed so that the oil flows down the tube over the joint.not into the joint. the blue end on those goes towards the heads..
otherwise the oil pools up at the o-ring and will certainly leak.
they really ought to have an arrow on them. _________________

Sorry to hear about your leaks. My uncle's Chirco engine has about 2000 miles on it; I'll see if it's weepy too when I'm out there this week.

You know, I like to think that I would consider that if I ever installed one of those… But I did see a Squareback at a show two years ago that had them alternating right/wrong/right/wrong on each side because "it looks cool man."

Install them properly and you're fine. I keep a few on board for emergencies only. But they're great if you don't run sled tins for some reason. _________________ Wash your hands

I'll bet that your driving style, which I'm sure you learned from Stuart, has something to do with what engine tin you have remaining Brian. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Note: the correct installation for the JayCee pushrod tubes are with the springs toward the case. If installed the opposite way, the pushrods could rub on the smaller diameter of the inner tube.
