Just finished reading all 73 pages of this thread and am blown away by the work you have done. My favorite part is that you are driving your SC and using it to haul stuff. Best of luck on your flights and in your journeys Glideking! _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

I managed to get in a few glamour shots today. I had to shoot quickly before crowds of people would gather and take selfies with the truck. I still had to Photoshop people out.
M plate indicated he was bound for the port of San Francisco in 1959. He is home.
With 900 miles of easy break in of the new engine with a single spring I installed the second of the dual springs on the valves. I used an air compressor in the spark plug holes to hold the valves closed so I did not have to pull the engine for the changeover. Now I can rev the engine a bit more. Funky was flying over Waldo grade at a speed I will not admit to. A long steep hill on the other side of the bridge. I am on my way to Kelley Park and Red Barn this weekend. The new red gates are not quite ready for the show so the old gates get to go this time. Last year he was a trailer queen because he was untested. This year he will do the many miles for himself. I will be sleeping under his new canvas for the first time. See you there.

That is so great! It sure felt great with the old springs. Can't wait to hear what it's like with the new. Congrats on the new milestones. Cheers, see you soon I hope! _________________ "I wish you could smell the smell that's coming from the bus"... |

Tapping into the fuse box for constant power is pretty easy and you can then have your GPS up front where you need it.
Wiper switch gets constant power, so connect in either at that fuse box position or even at the wiper switch. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available!

So fun to hang out with Kurt and see funky in person. He has done a spectacular job on Funky and is a super chill dude to boot.
I look forward to seeing Funky's gates done!

|

Standard bus tow bar is loose and requires grease fittings to be removed. This one hits the steering box and the bottom of my VW bumper. The towed VW can go into wild oscillations after a turn or at some speeds. I cut those tabs that hold the pins off to make something better.
I made this bolt on version so it won;t slide sideways, won't scrape off grease fittings, won't hit steering box, won't hit my bumper. I took it out today on a curvy mountain road and the freeway at high speed. Stable! It is set off center to avoid the steering box. It is lower so it clears the bumper on speed bumps and curbs. I installed my old Empi heavy sway bar. In view is my modified VW Fox dual circuit master cylinder. The extra colored wires are for the magnetic trailer lights mounted on the tilt bows.
Leaving for Blackstar and OCTO with Funky Truck as my RV toad. See you there. You can talk to me about why my gates are not done yet.

Nice mod. I have always hated how the tow bar does all that you describe.
Hope to meet you at OCTO this weekend. |

One of my favorite all time build threads on The Samba is this one Kurt did on "Funky trunk". My Gal and I met Kurt and funky truck today at OCTO. His single cab is amazing and Kurt is simply a super guy.
Kurt, I enjoyed chatting with you and thanks for letting me sit in Funky. You did a great job on the single cab!

Kurt,
I just saw the post about tapping into the dome light circuitry.
Consider installing a lighter socket under the dash, facing down. It will be completely hidden. You can tap into the fuse box without hacking the wiring at all. As technology changes, you can always keep up when you have the lighter socket available.
Nice to be able to charge a phone, have tunes etc.
Looking forward to seeing those gates done!!!!! |

Got to meet Kurt and "Funky" this weekend at OCTO. Thank you Kurt for sharing and letting me check out how much leg room "Funky" has.
Safe drive home my friend.

Funky Truck goes to El Prado 2017. Flat towing 500 miles each way went without a hitch. My camping rig's gas milage was not affected by Funky in tow. I got to meet many people who thanked me for making a fool of myself on Youtube.
This was the Woodstock of VW shows. More people came than could be handled by the park. "Funky" is out there somewhere. Beyond the tree line is the huge swap meet and behind me is acres of camp sites. If anybody asks why we do this tell them it is all about the people!
Funky finds a friend.
Between a 1959 and a 1966 there are very few parts that are the same.
Single reflection.
Funky visits Wolfsburg West 15 minutes away and got a tour by the owners where so many parts were sourced.
After all these years Funky goes to his first OCTO show. We get to meet Gerson there as he points to the first nose skin shipped to a customer.
I thank Gerson for supplying all of the reproduction sheet metal that was used to bring Funky back to usable condition.

Great to meet you, Alex, Jeny, and Funky at Blackstar El Prado and have you to my site. Your vast VW knowledge was overwhelming. Lasting memories were made.
