|

I got myself a Yakima Q rack system for my '02 GLS to haul the canoes around. I installed her, but dang did Yak's mounting placement seem off! The first rack position is only 6 inches from the top of the windshield, the 2nd rack 32 inches apart from the first, making both racks WAY at the front of my van. I've found a few pictures of the Q system mounted on a Eurovan and none of them seem to be following Yakima's dimensions; all seem to be mounted quite a ways back...basically starting around the rear door, which seems right to me for such a long vehicle
Anyone have any advice on rack placement? Maybe some approximate dimension? |

I have a yakima Q-tower setup on my hardtop as well -- Q12 is the clip if I recall correctly. I move mine around depending on what I'm carrying on the rack and what will make sense for reaching it on the roof (without having to break out my folding ladder). Normally I run them towards the back third of the van so I can step up on the rear tire, the rear bumper, or with the sliding door open, sometimes I'll kick my shoe off and step up off the rear bench.
For a while I had a rooftop basket - and I put that at the back of the van with just enough clearance for the door to open, then I switched to a Yakima skybox and I moved the racks to the middle of the van. With the right clip you can move it just about the length of the van.
For something long like a canoe, I would consider adding in a 3rd bar/tower if you can and then I think you will have a well spread out load. One as far back as possible, one as far forward (that 6" from front makes sense ) and then a third to split the difference.

Sorry I think that instructions probably state that 6" from the front is the minimum distance to the front (move back as much as you like), and the 32" span would align your rack for Yakima products (such as a rack, Skybox, etc). |

Awesome! Thanks for your detailed response. That all makes perfect sense about Yakima offering measurements to coincide with the other products. Also, I think a 3rd rack is great idea. I went ahead and moved my two further back. I'll strap the canoe on this weekend and see how it feels. So nice not having to rely on that stupid foam blocks!
Thanks again! |
